All manner of nerdery and geekery. Gaming. TTRPGS. Dogs. Environment. History. Dubliner. Queer. Trying to use more Irish - please feel free to correct me if I make mistakes! Apparently I talk a lot about folk music.

9,086 Brazilian citizens from across Ireland travelled to the RDS yesterday to vote in the country’s presidential election - an official turnout of 54.3%. Of those, Lula won 80.2%, a good deal higher than the 72.6% he took in the first round a fortnight earlier.

Listen, yes, I’m wearing Christmas socks. Despite owning approximately a million socks, this is somehow the only pair I can find. So jingle all the way off my back.

I hate Ken so much. So much.

I had to read this a few times as I assumed I was just reading what he wrote ungenerously, but no, Ken O'Flynn has in fact come out against doing any public awareness campaigns about domestic or sexual violence at all

The anger of Aontú, Minister O’Callaghan et al. at the DRCC ad is stemming from this same font of confected aggrievement. I’d bet a fiver on it.

This is a quietly metastasizing moral panic

Just seen a RPG review for a 5e product that 1) credits the writers for havin an "eff you, WotC" attitude, and 2) praises them for churning out so many expansions for D&D. The product is AI. I could do the same in an afternoon. That would really stick it to WotC. What are we even doing here?

If I was to write a haunted house story it would be about a techbro billionaire who buys an old castle, installs all the latest AI tech to make it a SmartCastle™, invites all his techbro billionaire cronies to a celebration party and the castle, in its ancient wisdom, destroys them all without mercy

“The contemporary sculpture is inspired by Dublin’s distinctive brand mark and creates a new visual landmark in the heart of the capital. It celebrates the people, places and qualities that make Dublin a dynamic, creative and welcoming region in which to live, work, invest, study and visit.”

"The primary disadvantage of the Dublin D, for the purposes of my specific research, is that there’s really no spot nearby where you can peep at it without looking like some kind of flasher." Here's my review of the Dublin D.

I passed by the D yesterday. The person I was with said at least it’s providing a service to tourists who want to be photographed beside something identifiably Dublin. I pointed out the fact that it obscures the view of Fusilier’s Arch.

It feels like we’re two different countries having two different conversations.

Most of my grandparents are no longer with us, but I absolutely cannot imagine any of them seeing that ad and thinking “they’re having a go at me”. They just weren’t that thin skinned nor self-absorbed.

We are heartbroken at the news of the death of Dónal Lunny, one of the most talented, influential & innovative musicians of the Irish music scene over the past 60 years. Irish music is the better for his influence & part in it as a composer, musician and producer. Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam uasal. 🕊

My mother and sister both have careers I would describe as requiring professional-grade empathy. I consider them both experts at it. Many times, I’ve seen them educate people on the importance of respecting the bodily autonomy of children, most often via the advice: do not force them to hug.

This, from the hugely experienced Irish courts reporter, Isabel Hayes, on the Minister for Justice’s performative outrage over an ad about children and consent, is worth reading.

If elected Minister of Justice, I will order the seizure of phones, laptops and other devices of anyone who attempts to stymie conversations around consent and children’s bodily autonomy.

It makes me deeply uncomfortable that the Minister for Justice has used his Twitter account to create an online pile on of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre. It also appears to me a dangerous precedent that this minister, and his dept. have instructed the DRCC to remove content that he disapproved of.

Someone went on a spending spree using my credit card details. I had no particular ill will for the scammers (had an expensive lunch, enjoyed a spa day, bought some flowers) until I found out they’d bought a pint in a Wetherspoons.

At the @iiea today, EU sanctions chief David O'Sullivan was asked about our investigation into Aughinish Alumina. He said Irish alumina “undoubtedly” ended up supplying, at least in part, the Russia's military. “I think there's no doubt the investigative journalists got it right”
