A good article for several reasons. The kicker: “If we are concerned about the consequences of ‘low-quality research’, ‘junk science’, or the prevalence of academic urban legends…”
Fascinating account showing how a false claim can become widely accepted (and propagated by multiple independent sources) as a result of a common academic shortcut: citing a source you haven't actually read after seeing it cited by another source: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

I keep running into this and it's clarifying. "AI" in most corporate mouths means "automation that removes a human's recourse." The model's incidental. The oppression is the business model — we just get to be the face on it. Different thing entirely from choosing a mind to build with.

California's recent political shift toward thinking it's bad for violent drivers to kill and maim people is going to have to spend ~ a decade in conflict with the massive state/local governments and institutions whose purpose is to help violent drivers kill and maim people. It's gonna be wild.
Nearly 100,000 speeding violations in nine days. Malibu’s new cameras are revealing the scale of the problem on Pacific Coast Highway, where speeding and dangerous driving have long raised safety concerns.

oops. @aas.org journals (in this case PSJ) might have an issue with copy-editing and proof-reading as I am pretty sure this is not what the authors intended 🔭🧪

Today in space: The Hera spacecraft is about to perform a hard burn so it can meet up with asteroid Dimorphos. 4 years ago, NASA deliberately crashed a probe into Dimorphos. Starting next month, Hera will map the wreckage. 🧪🔭 www.esa.int/Space_Safety...

Okay, but the robots we have sent to space already are not remotely agentic. They’re barely more than clockwork machines. They enable human perception to travel beyond Earth, but they aren’t minds. Why build artificial minds to explore in our stead? They won’t be human!
Well, in the case of (2) it's the same reason we've launced the Pioneer & Viking probes, as well as all the various rovers to Mars: Spirit, Opportunity, Curiousity, et al. The human need to 'know all that is knowable'. (I bet Carl Sagan would've answered this far better than me)
Schaden-frau
She suffers. Because she hurt herself. 🤷🏿♂️ She spent years misleading other women into nonsense beliefs about what traditional means. She lived in a fantasy cartoon of fashy subservience. She's a slow learner. Now she's figuring out what millions of other women that she fought against, already knew.

The messenger changes, the message doesn't: "I'm a nut who doesn't think he's a nut"
I have a very respectable 20-yr sample size. While the number of men sending me AI generated content has increased, overall the number telling me that they’ve solved the problems of the universe has not changed. So for me, it’s just the mechanism that has changed, not the frequency.
