Cory's threads are excellent. "The idea that an LLM might be able to stand in for a workshop is grounded in the fallacy that the point of a workshop is to have people tell you how to fix your story, rather than analyzing other people's writing in order to develop your own critical skills."

Through my writing life, nothing improved my writing more than participation in peer-based workshops: where a group of writers at about the same stage in their artistic development gather to read one another's work and offer feedback specifically aimed at improving each other's stories.

Not even slightly. The only thing that surprised me is the impact. I checked out some of the early LLMs and they were so full of hallucinations they were worse than useless. Now it's transformed the way we work more than any other single feature I can recall. And I've been doing this for decades.

It's doubled our team's productivity (financial sector, software development). But now we spend most of our time supervising/directing ai agents and checking their work rather than writing code. And our salary has not doubled and our hours have not halved...

Helms: Think this is a good reccomendation to open have visited SpaceX to look at their lander paradigm , also Blue Origin, want to have dialog with the lander providers on how they are going with their tech and schedule. Also want to understand the uncrewed demo and how this plays down crew risk.

#enshittification made me realize that markets are like browsers. Capitalists get to shape which inputs market systems see (property rights, obligations, entitlements) to shape market outcomes. bsky.app/profile/misa...

Enshittification is particularly galling because (in theory, at least), digital technology should be *really* hard to enshittify.

Before casting your ballot, review EVERY selection on the screen AND the paper ballot or record. If anything is wrong, stop and notify a poll official immediately. Take the time you need. Your vote matters.

These voters said they corrected their selections before casting their ballots. In Madison County, WBBJ reported that the local NAACP and other community organizations received multiple complaints about machines changing voters’ selections.

In Williamson County, voters told WSMV they needed multiple attempts to register their intended choices. One said she selected Democrat Jerri Green, but Republican Marsha Blackburn kept appearing instead. Another reported a similar experience while voting at Nashville’s Hermitage Library.

TENNESSEE VOTERS: Check your ballots carefully. Local news outlets are reporting complaints from early voters who say voting machines displayed candidates they did not intend to select.

To reflect on how this plays out in mathematics: Editing, especially by a senior coauthor, should include re-thinking the content at a technical level and not just polishing tone. E.g. adjusting lemmas to the minimal hypotheses to show *why* they are true.

This is incredibly well written, informative, and important. Most civil servants (who remain) are working their asses off, trying to hold the institution together. But they are also often prevented from say true (even obvious) things in public. Those of us with the freedom to do so must speak.

Budgets can be restored. Scientific communities take much longer to rebuild. My latest essay explores funding uncertainty inside NASA, the difficulty of speaking up as a civil servant, and why the costs begin before cuts become law. plasmanerd.substack.com/p/the-oath-e...

Elon Musk approached Donald Trump with the idea of slowing down Starlink in Ukraine ‐The Telegraph reports. I don't know what they hope to accomplish here, but they are undermining our nation's ability to defend itself just because they dislike the president.

While the metric system is clearly superior for science and international communication, I’ll probably go to my grave using inches and feet for sewing and woodworking.

I’ve long been an annoying “Fahrenheit is superior for human scale things” person, but way to add evidence that the foot/inch system also makes sense.
