It’s just so appalling and enraging how casual and commonplace this has become. I’m out of words.

Under pressure, the DOD just released the text of its secret 10-year agreement with the NIH. Here are the biggest revelations from the document 🧵

I know this isn’t a new thought, but so many people at the NIH do such vital and transformative work under the most difficult and uncertain conditions, it makes me so angry that this feckless coward coopts the respect those people have earned to lie again and again and again.

Rand Paul--who doesn't believe in evolution--holding a hearing of Dr. Fauci--a retired, life-long public servant-- while we are *actively* in the midst of SEVERAL disease outbreaks due to unnecessary public health cuts and corporate lobbying shows exactly how unserious Republicans are.

Not coincidentally in a period where VC and billionaires are poaching researchers to do connectomics in private, for (in my view) tenuous connections to building AI products.

I am impressed that I can describe a half-remembered neuroscience paper to Claude, getting a few details wrong and with no authors mentioned, and so far it is 2/2 at both finding the right paper and correcting my recollection.

I'm enjoying the heck out of the World Cup this year, in no small part because every game is happening during my waking hours. But a surprise bonus is how nice it is that every stadium has been stripped of its stupid corporate sponsor name for a few weeks.

Also, when I was there, small lab sizes but a common organism and tools made labs quite focused and adjacent but non-overlapping in their fundamental work, making it easy to celebrate all successes. Everyone doing glassfish whole brain imaging has me wary there will be more toes to step on.

Group leaders will land fine, but morale during this transition at the institute is going to be rough. I also worry reduce the impact of the wonderful visitors program and the conference program.

My hot take is that not only should we have additional congressional districts, but there should also be psuedodistricts based on things other than geography. Age ranges, gender, income ranges. Each person should have several representatives who each represent different facets of people.

Buttigieg: We sit in a in a country that's got the wrong number of people on the Supreme Court, possibly the wrong number of representatives in the House of Representatives. And by the way, when you consider the disenfranchisement of the people of DC, we have the wrong number of states in the US

This seems important when thinking about all of the people (especially academics) who stayed in Epstein's orbit. Not that all would agree in the details per se, but that they were not repulsed by deeply held misogyny, expressed in so many different ways

Jess Calarco@jessicacalarco.com

Epstein responds in the affirmative, insisting "no really smart women---none." Schank, in turn, admits that his "very best Phd student was female," but laments that she "decided to quit being a professor," adding "that is the point; no matter how smart, she wanted to be liked or some such crap."

There are lessons from WaPo’s destruction for science too. Public funding (via NIH, NSF &c) built in the US a science superpower in large part b/c of democratic values: agencies are accountable to the public through Congress, not controlled by whims of a billionaire. Autocratic control…

I would love to organize a conference bringing together neuroscientists, video game developers, and VFX artists. Visualization, spatial methods, understanding of body mechanics, they all have different perspectives on some similar problems.

So that gives them predicted muscle activations for any actor footage, which they can transfer to the equivalent but distinct muscle array under a Na'vi facial mesh. Also, there's some interesting bits in there about the difference in modeling muscles in soft tissue rather than hard joints.

The last year has been a real lesson in what Orwell meant. So much energy goes into obfuscating and downplaying basic facts, since to say them clearly makes the stupidity and cruelty black and white. The second ICE murder seems to have finally broken through that a little bit.

Just to link to science, if you have used CATMAID to look at neural circuits in the fly or the larva, he laid the groundwork for the reconstruction and exploration you see today.

Back in 2010, I moved to Zürich with two suitcases. I knew no one there, but was tremendously lucky in that the other postdoc in my group at the time was this fellow named Mark. Within the first day or two, he invited me out to watch a World Cup game at one of the many outdoor bars there.

Soon we became good friends. When the lab moved, he moved back to England and build digital tools for improving civil society. After many years, I saw him in London over lunch last year and caught up too briefly. Devastatingly, not even two weeks ago I found out that he was very sick...

... and he passed away last weekend. I'm so glad that I was able to see him (which I hoped was the first of many times), Especially amidst all the bullshit right now it's just so upsetting that a kind, thoughtful person who was a benefit to the world and all those who knew him is gone far too soon.

I love this piece! It shows the many ways a connectome can be put to use, AND the many complementary modalities that are needed, beyond the connectome, to answer real questions. And it makes me feel good about having helped to generate the thing. :)

Calling out political extremists for being hypocritical (“they claim to value free speech, but actually try to censor speech they don’t like!”) is like calling out a football team for playing both offense and defense. They’re not trying to embody fixed standards, they’re just trying to win.

Here's a question: With EM, you find a super weird cell type (n=2 animals). They have truly unusual characteristics, but it's structure only so you have no idea what they do, what their transcriptomic/molecular properties are, nor do obviously solve any problem that's been posed.

However, the unusual structure makes them clearly doing something specific and atypical, and at least they interact with circuits many people care about. Do you invest the time to write it up as a description, even without a satisfying conclusion?
