A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

helenwebberley.comAre transgender sports bans really about protecting women? | Dr Helen WebberleyThe data says no. Those most hostile to women are most in favour of banning trans athletes.

if voting didn't matter they wouldn't be working so hard to stop you

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

It's vastly more comforting to believe in an imminent robot apocalypse than the truth: the things that will destroy us are extensions of the unsexy but obvious problems all around us. We are not doomed in one grand way, but a thousand petty small ways.

Dave Willner@dwillner.bsky.social

Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

She took a side in culture wars. It might feel like she didn’t bc she was proudly a hillbilly country singer from evangelical family, her comments were affirmative rather than critical (eg “yay trans people” rather than “boo transphobes”), and she commented less on electoral politics.

"At a time when no American celebrity seems immune from the country’s many divisions, Dolly Parton was a crossover icon who stayed neutral in the culture wars while still speaking her mind," writes Zachary B. Wolf. | Analysis

As with American culture, Dolly sought to represent the best of what southern culture can be, in defiance of the no-good peckerwood assholes who try to define it at its worst

It really is quite funny how the people who insisted for years that leftists needed to be pragmatic and meet voters where they are have planted their flag in support of Israel and data centers, two of the most unpopular stances in the country

the thing people most strongly object to is *deception*, and being suggested something was developed without AI when it was in fact using AI.

I've been saying this. if the Very Serious Centrists are getting dogwalked by DSA radicals with almost no money, they have no business claiming to be the most electable ones

Incredible that the center-left habitually chides progressives for forgetting the "ancient wisdom" of politics and then watches as they're beaten by the most basic organizing: campaigning in public, finding volunteers, canvassing. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/10/u...

there is a cohort of men who resent the responsibilities and obligations of adulthood — of the fact that you owe things to other people. it is a fundamentally childish impulse that they have reconfigured as the height of masculinity, and i think it informs the parasocial attraction to platner.

I guess if the idea was "choose between all the world's almonds and all the world's data centers, which is more valuable" ya but the point isn't that, the point is that you could supply 100% of the world's data centers with water for like 3% of the almond crop which no one would even notice

The defining principle of our society is that people who were lucky during the dot com boom or Web 2.0 should have vast and ever-growing individual power over the entire world. The only acceptable check on their power is their squabbles with each other.

Hell, you pay a premium for doing something worthwhile. People know you’ll work in education, healthcare, elder care, child care, research or NGOs out of the goodness of your heart. You gotta spend 50 hrs a week finding new ways to exploit workers or fool consumers to get paid a market rate

Not trying to subtweet anyone in particular here, but, I feel like right now everybody with power in the world is worried about their velocity, that they're not going fast enough, and is just assuming they're headed in the right direction

It tickles me that it's still trivial to get Google Translate to produce this type of error (wouw means kite as in the bird, cometa means kite as in the toy; kite the bird and kite the toy are not homographs in either Dutch or Spanish, so the only explanation is using English as an intermediary)

Luckily I basically just pick low seeds because I know nothing about this sport, so it's statistically impossible for this to happen to me. Lucky because I don't think I would have the existential confidence to handle it

Part of Trump’s mass appeal (and of why he’s so dangerous) is that he really seems to share Joe Barstool’s worldview that there are no complex problems: Everything has a simple brute solution, which previous leaders were somehow too stupid or weak to deploy.

These ghouls act like they've discovered some novel secret: "Hey, guys, GUYS! Did you know that we can just kill people whenever we want?" Yes, you absolute idiot, that's ALWAYS been true. We just chose not to, for good and self-interested reasons which the entire world is about to learn yet again.
