Layoffs suck. Grief is hard. I lost an amazing icon & type designer. And I lost a design token wizard โ€” truly one of the best at color theory Iโ€™ve ever seen. And a mobile designer / technologist who was truly amazing โ€” design system alumni. If youโ€™re looking to hire, I am happy to connect you.

How do you teach craft? Where does it come from? I asked this to @curiouschaos.com at the end of Wireframe Live yesterday and here's her answer: "The foundational piece ... is that the person cares." ๐Ÿ’ก What a great insight. I truly believe this is the thing that is separating us from the LLMs.

Chatting with @donnie.damato.design is the ultimate systems geek out session. I honestly loved this. Even though my "passion hives" were showing.

Excited to sit down and chat with *the* @donnie.damato.design tomorrow! Get ready for strong opinions and cynical views. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Hot take: collapsible UI sections should mostly be reserved for things which are initially collapsed. Collapsing to avoid scrolling is slower than scrolling

Ugh! Im so tired of watching men pressuring women about having children by saying "you'd be a great mother". She wasnt arguing that! And like... no shit! But you missed the flipping point.

Seriously though, its not as big of a story as NYC, but Virginia flipped 15! seats yesterday including the Governor, Lt Gov, and AG. We went from barely holding a 51 majority in the state house to 63! Take note!

Them: What's the standard for this? Me: This Them: I don't like the standard, can we change it? Me: For what? Them: For this custom thing Me: We dont have a standard for that custom thing Them: Then what should be standard for this custom thing? Me: Its custom, go talk to who made it! #designsystems

Here here! If there's anything 25 years of coding CSS has taught me is that the road to the present is filled with ways to write CSS that no longer exist and have died off. Regular ol' CSS is a constant that will always work, and will always be the most valuable skill. Hell, it's never been better.

I know tailwind already gets so much flak, but here's some more... It's failing our young developers. They're not actually learning CSS. CSS is transferable. Tailwind is not. This is my hill.

How do folks handle education around the topic of truncation? I find this is the fallback for designers who want "prettier" layouts and engineers implementing "responsive" design. How do you show them how terrible the UX of it is? Or force them to think through how users access the full content?

I'm realizing just how important it is for design systems to be in the same meetings with product leadership. Our goals need to align with company goals. Otherwise, we may be fighting against each other unintentionally.

Ok Figma, I know i give you a lot of flack, but holy cow, is AI image search the bees knees! I had about 15 screenshots from 30 designers spread across an ungodly amount of files. It found each actual design frame in seconds. So, yes, I humbly say thank you.
