"Every illness has a remedy that heals it, except foolishness, which defeats all who try to cure it." - Al-Mutanabbi (10th century)

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Yup. Security scans in CI please people!

The antis like to try to say software using AI to help with development is necessarily more insecure, but I'm at a point where I'd have an increasingly hard time trusting devs who *don't* use AI. We're in an arms race. I want devs to keep up.

I was just thinking “what does CoT look like for decision models?” And then basically I think this is the answer.

alphaXiv@alphaxiv.org

Instead of actually generating CoT, this paper uses a hypernetwork to predict small specific updates to the LLM's bias parameters, approximating the effect of thinking without generating the trace. On some benchmarks, it matches thinking with only 7% of the latency alphaxiv.org/abs/2610.03039

I was very bearish on “AI apocalypse” until today. Jev and figure.ai developments just in the last few days are truly revolutionary. Self driving cars and murderbots will happen. I just really hope someone manages to build a better future from the ashes of the current world order.

Power is not given, it is taken.

404 Media@404media.co

NEW: Hackers ripped down a Flock camera above a roadway, made a near-complete copy of the data stored inside it, and shared the files with 404 Media and @wired.com, revealing in new detail how exactly Flock Safety’s cameras track the movements of both vehicles and people.

You think thousands of aspiring directors, editors, PAs, etc are going to throw their careers away to move to Georgia! The real story is how this is the dumbest bluff in Hollywood history, and the fermenting anger inside Paramount at the BS.

This is a very interesting project. I do wonder what it looks like when we have an automated rubric for science. Maybe some good, maybe some bad.

Ethan Mollick@emollick.bsky.social

This is both an interesting experiment and a sign of a tsunami coming for academia. AIs retroactively reading the research and finding both opportunities and issues with published papers, then sharing those judgements publicly. d3jhl7jsny6f2h.cloudfront.net

Politicians are bad at their jobs. But I think we’re also terrible bosses. Every manager learns the same lesson: tell people WHAT you need, not HOW to do it. Specify outcomes. Delegate method. Politicians work for us. And by any management standard, we are catastrophic bosses.

A good boss says: reduce overdose deaths. I don’t care if it’s treatment beds or policing or something I haven’t thought of. Surprise me. Show me the numbers. We do the opposite. We pre-commit to methods as tribal identifiers.

Then we punish any politician who achieves our stated goals using the other team’s toolbox. It is the type of micromanagement that kills any employee. We should treat our politicians like employees. Which means we need to be better bosses.

Politicians are bad at their jobs. But I think we’re also terrible bosses. Every manager learns the same lesson: tell people WHAT you need, not HOW to do it. Specify outcomes. Delegate method. Politicians work for us. And by any management standard, we are catastrophic bosses.

We don’t evaluate outcomes. We evaluate process theater. Did she vote for the bill with the right name? Did he use the approved vocabulary? Did she have the right cosponsors? Is the city safer? Can people afford housing? Who knows — but did you see what she SAID?

This whole thread isn’t wrong, but a great lesson why us older folk are so wary of “vibes”. Vibes are so fluid, so misleading. You (no matter the age) do NOT understand vibes. Vibes mean 1000 things to 500 people. Legislation and policy are what matters.

It is so nice for Trump to give such an obvious gift to the next Democratic admin. It won’t solve all the relationship problems with Canada, but returning the Lake to its real name will be a great gesture.

There is something hilarious about a guy working for a company whose spending is more than twice its revenue criticizing social security, which has had well known modest fixes that could have been implemented decades ago.

Sam@samd.bsky.social

The “head of strategic futures” at OpenAI just went on an unhinged rant against social security sometimes I feel like these tech companies are actively trying to alienate as many normal people as possible

I do think it is funny that all finance jobs (investment banking, VC, stock trader) need to fully automated for this to even have a small chance of being true.

Claude is going to have to kill a lot of jobs to generate $30T for Anthropic. This is a number that dwarfs even Elon Musk’s most feverish dreams which include strip mining Mars and data centers in space.

For the love of all that is sacred. If you are a journalist be at the docks when they land and have a 5th of vodka with you. You will get the news.

Personally, this, and requirements around water, is what I’d like to see here instead of bans. The people building data centers need to figure out how to help the local regions they are placed.

As working with AI agents looks more like management, we may want to consider large-scale management training for the AI era. The US government actually did this once, & the WW2 Engineering, Science, and Management War Training program taught 1.8 million & was a large reason for the post-war boom.

Great for them. They should be proud to be an example for what rich people should do. Could we please not pretend you can feed a New Yorker for $0.42?

The secret of Elon Musk’s business success is creating a permanent sense of being close to the next big breakthrough. Sometimes he delivers like reusable rockets and mass market EVs while other times it’s vaporware like the Hyperloop and full self driving. An iPhone killing AI device? Vaporware.
