Anti-incumbency sentiment is really valuable to an opposition candidate that is inoffensive to voters. To an opposition candidate that can arouse strong feelings of antipathy to themselves, it often is not enough.

Trump says he'll either make a deal with Iran or finish them off, calling that the whole question.

Trump may very well have intended to coerce UA into a deal following Anchorage. The available evidence suggests he intended to do so from Day 1. But reality is that leaders, especially elected leaders, don't have freedom of action. The tiger they ride has to be willing to go that direction.

There is a credibility problem because Trump created a credibility by how he framed the issuing of the licenses. He didn't frame it as being a result of a looming deadline in the law, he framed it in terms of a "deal" with Russia.

Janis Kluge@jakluge.de

There may be a credibility problem for the US' Russia sanctions because of Trump's generally Russia-friendly stance, and it matters for sanctions effectiveness. The exceptions and the waiver could lead to the assumption that sanctions won't be enforced.

Viewing Biden through Trump coloured glasses leads to overly generous views of Biden. If Trump had been POTUS in Feb 2022, he would have been a lame duck, with a D contolled Congress after a historic defeat in the midterms, causing the surviving R's to be uncooperative with him.

Maria Drutska@mariadrutska.bsky.social

With Trump's actions, it's terrifying to think what may have happened in February 2022 if he was US President. Joe Biden, thank you very very much. Ukraine owes you a debt which can never be repaid.🫡 Pictured: Biden in Kyiv, a place Trump would never have the balls to visit.

Countefactuals can be a useful exercise for examing policy, but it should never be used simply to rationalize that the path taken was the best one. A better counterfactual to analyze would be: What would Biden have done differently if he knew Trump would become POTUS again?
