Ah no, seemed like such a great guy. Loved him as Chekov and Bester.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

It's probably too much to hope for Brazil to hold out tonight too, but maybe!

First Orban, now Vučić. Both fundamentally undone by rank corruption of their regimes. Which is so often the reality of the authoritarian right in power. Really worth paying heed to in Western Europe right now

I actually find it quite embarrassing to watch speeches by Obama now, particularly his appeal to American decency. He's right of course. You don't win elections telling voters they're spoiled little shits. But I don't want to hear it

The left in Ireland can only muster 20% of the vote. Grim.

@businesspost.bsky.social Latest RED C poll for the @businessposthq sees the government parties hit a new low of just 30% joint support between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael as voters respond poorly to the budget.

Unless I'm very much mistaken Jim O'Callaghan-style reactionary Reform-lite politics wasn't on the ballot for FFG in the last general election. They don't have a mandate for this shit. I didn't vote for them - never have - but we've all been sold a bill of goods by Mickey Martin and Simon Harris.

Fianna Fáil have become, to quote Theresa May about the Tories many moons ago, the nasty party. Nasty, brutish, narrow minded, unambitious, with nothing positive to offer the Irish people, if they have a vision for the future it's in the service to monied interests and nobody else.

It's somehow even worse than the Bertie or Brian Cowen governments. They were useless (and in some instances corrupt), but they didn't have the nihilism of this bunch of non entities. Utterly depressed by the state of Irish politics. And no Sinn Féin are no better. Vote for Soc Dems and Greens.

This, from the hugely experienced Irish courts reporter, Isabel Hayes, on the Minister for Justice’s performative outrage over an ad about children and consent, is worth reading.

A lot of international coverage of Ireland opens with a preamble about how it used to be a poor, conservative country but recently became wealthy and liberal. Given that we now have adults born in 2008, I wonder if it is time to retire this preamble? They don’t use it for Norway or South Korea…

I'm not that fussed about neutrality if I'm honest, but I don't see how giving China, the US, Russia and our old friends in Britain veto power over what we do or don't do is neutral in any sense of the word.

Social Democrats@social-democrats.bsky.social

If Ireland did not have the Triple Lock, nothing would have stopped us from joining the US and UK in Iraq if govt had wished to. FF/FG will tell us that it's more nuanced, but it is that simple. They are taking the guardrails off Irish neutrality, with no public mandate to do so. Shame on them.

Also the notion that without the triple lock in 2003 we would've invaded Iraq (tbf she didn't say we would just that we could and it was left hanging there)... Ffs like

This argument about the government potentially sending people to non human rights compliant operations post triple lock removal is based on the fact that we previously sent a limited number of troops to do... humanitarian work?!

Absolutelty. Trump forced Ireland to abandon the people of south Lebanon to Israel occupation. That's the triple lock right there.

I initially read this as Keith Andrews and ngl would be more inclined to click if it was

It’s come to something when a photographer has to get legal advice, before displaying this photo in an exhibition, due to the risk of being prosecuted as a terrorist, but that’s exactly what I had to do yesterday. What a state this country is in.

They'll label Sally Rooney as a terrorist but the types of people the who led arson attacks on hotels or blocked, attacked or doxed the RNLI are people with legitimate concerns who must be listened to.
