Meanwhile, in Utah County…

NEW: A bird flu outbreak has been raging uncontrolled on a Utah mink farm for two months. Flu experts fear it could spark a devastating human pandemic. But officials haven’t acted — instead prioritizing the financial interests of the fur trade.

The largest heat wave of the 1960s reached ~6% of the planet, lasting 46 days over the Atlantic and adjacent areas. The largest heat wave of the 2020s hit ~85% of the globe, lasted 367 days, touching virtually everyone. Calling these “heat storms" instead of “heat waves” seems like a good invention.

Urban heat island effects are bad enough. Clustering data centers in cities, each of which can produce the heat of 54,000 houses, will make it exponentially worse, especially in already hot places like Phoenix Gift link to this great @bloomberg.com infographic: www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

Reflexively, a lot of people say ag is the problem child when we talk about #water in Utah, especially Great Salt Lake — *but*... it's a complex stew that also ropes in lawns, more people & the shifting climate.

kuer.orgIs the shrinking Great Salt Lake a climate problem, a farm problem or something else?Agricultural water use usually gets the blame, but Utah data shows city water use now accounts for a record-high 25% of the water depleted from the Great Salt Lake Basin.

To whom it may concern, if 2026 or 2027 end up as the hottest year on record, the main reason is climate change. Not El Nino. Mentioning only El Nino would be like covering a gold medal 4x100 relay team and only mentioning the sprinter who went last.

More dangerous heat is expected across the South/Southwest this week. We can now easily connect the dots to human-caused climate change, which is making these temperatures at least 5x more likely. This is also increasing drought and wildfire potential. Info: www.climatecentral.org/climate-shif...
