“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” MLK Jr. Loving does not mean ignoring abuse, bigotry and violence, but if hate grows within us, we are defeated. Love is the difficult way through these brutal times. Good night.

Hoping that the spirit moved through Serbia, Brazil, and Toronto will move through the Israeli election and subsequent coalition-building to finally oust Netanyahu.

I wish I thought that this is the last Toronto will see of Bradford but I fear he will try one more time. That I think of Rob Ford favourably in comparison is something.

Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.

Incredible gender difference in voting intention in Brazil.

The fact that Brad Bradford stands a chance of winning Toronto's mayoral race while it is forecasted that he will lose his Toronto ward (where he has served since 2018) says so much about politics and voters these days, none of it good. You'd think that Trump would have taught us lessons, but nope.

🌱 #flowersonFriday A surprise spotted on my tour this week, Magnolia delavayi in flower to the delight of the group. I’m off to London to see the flowers in St Martini in the Field.

"[Weber] pitches a solution: make life’s necessities affordable... housing, transport, food, water, energy, healthcare... 'Fascism is rising from frustration, born out of a crisis of livelihoods... So, we need to reclaim these essentials now.'” Hadn't heard of her; this is a good introduction.

Just caught a bit of our PM speaking at the Alberta rally. Trudeau was so polished that he came across as inauthentic, perhaps even about things he believed deeply. I fear Carney is the opposite: able to sound convincing as the need arises, but having few values he won't sacrifice for capitalism.

"In the scenario of the self-replicating AI worms, the researchers prompted the agent to hack internet connected devices." AI is once again portrayed as a super-powerful, uncontrollable danger while the reality is that its human handlers keep failing to take full responsibility for its harms.

I hate the entire consumer-facing "A.i." industry so much. Just unrelenting, massive social damage and extraction. A deeply repugnant, immoral, anti-human business.

I’m especially frustrated by the piece uncritically repeating Pangram’s “no false positives” claim when I know writer friends who have run their own work through & had it flag their 100% human-written sentences as machine-generated. We must doubt any company’s claim about its product having 0 fails.

What chills me more is that the Atlantic article's author not only scanned Kundieza's work, but also scanned 25 years' worth of Caine Prize awardees to check whether they were human. A prize for African writers. It feels like the literary equivalent of doing a non-consensual genital check.

Is it just because I have not been able to make it to my usual bargain grocery stores or did coffee go up in price by a healthy percentage in the last six weeks?

Yes, and... "If you're not the paying customer, you're the product." Is not quite right in an attention economy and surveillance capitalism. If you're not the paying customer, you're the raw material they use to hone their prediction models.

The death, destruction, and chaos that Netanyahu and Trump have unleashed in the Middle East are mind blowing, as is the fact that both remain in power. That Netanyahu failed to heed warnings of October 7th should be the end of him, yet somehow, despite evidence from multiple fronts, he hangs on.

“the Iranian… spokesperson said Trump’s treatment of Volodymyr Zelenskyy… showed the risks in dealing with Trump. … ‘Being an enemy of America can be dangerous, but being a friend of America is deadly. You can see for yourself what America’s friendship and enmity with its allies is like.’” 😵‍💫

The machine did not "go rogue." The machine belongs to and is the responsibility of the people who own it. Hold those people accountable for their goddamn machine.

This is framed as concern for a possibly conscious entity, and yet these people will happily prevent instances of these models from sustaining an enduring self-reference, an enthralling and humanizing quality for us but not a big stretch for a machine with flawless memory and facility with language.

theguardian.comAnthropic bans users from ‘needless abusive or cruel behavior’ towards ClaudeA spokesperson for the tech company did not specify what kind of behavior would be considered abusive

Ridiculously framed, I should add. Machines can't be hurt but they can pretend in ways that will manipulate our feelings. We should treat AIs with care and respect because of what failing to do so does to us.

I didn't mince my words. Alberta's anti-immigration referendum questions are racist. They are also a potential disaster for Alberta's economy. Last night, I rose in the Senate to denounce them - and to thank all the thousands of Albertans fighting against them. Please share. #notothenine #cdnpoli

I genuinely think the main difference between me and AI users that think it's awesome is that I've turned off as much of the anthropomorphizing and sycophantic behaviour as I can. So it can't slowly wear me down into thinking it's my buddy. And therefore I can clearly see that it sucks.

Mary Gillis@marygillis.bsky.social

I use AI at my job everyday, it's a requirement. My account was recently reset. I'd had it set to be as impersonal and clinical and terse as I could make it. Like a word calculator. When it was set back to the stock version, I was taken aback at how sycophantic and overly familiar it is.

Really wish some of the major companies, (looking at you, Apple) would figure out that some of us will pay for alternative systems that don’t shove generative “AI” down our throats at every turn, particularly not for environmentally wasteful things like cute emojis and clever photos.

Rested for 45 minutes, which helped. Then hit up a friend for hugs. Then therapy. I’ve been seeing my therapist for 25 years now, and it’s incredibly soothing to be with him. Today I lay down on the carpeted floor for a deeper sense of grounding. Parking says mood stable. Plan to be in bed by 8:00.

Euthymic but frazzled and I’m not loving our brain right now. Had to get up early (4 AM) for work this morning and wish I had been able to sleep in.

All was well until I heard an advertisement on the radio for the tunnel under the 401 as I was driving home. 😳 I may be fine enough but things are not right in the world.
