As we start to get to the “you still haven’t voted so I’m going to creepily send you your address from a los Angeles phone number to remind you to vote” part of election season, please reflect on this 2021 text from my father (Leo was my cat):

Here's a rarity: the premiere (and I think only) issue of Infobahn, a slick magazine published in 1995, with articles about privacy, MUDs, Usenet groups, spam and commercialization of the Internet, and fiction by Rudy Rucker. And a sidebar article by me.

Originally a Usenet post, it accompanies a piece by Joel Furr about his Internet meme t-shirts and his campaign against Canter & Siegel, the notorious "Green Card lawyers" who posted the first-ever Internet commercial spam. Copies of Infobahn are very rare; I may donate mine to the Internet Archive.

UVA undergrad Aleena Patel created a very cool resource that helps voters in Charlottesville and Albemarle County both find where their polling place is and how to get there via various means of transportation, keeping in mind that not everyone drives. transittoturnout.org

Reason #101 why I'll never be an SNL writer: I came up with a sketch idea for a remake of "Wild and Crazy Guys", only it's about two plant freaks who go to suburban garden centers, find the ground cover section, and jump around gleefully high-fiving and shouting "Phloxes! Phloxes!"

Hard to overstate how much Hegseth's execution stream mirrors the U.S. military's traditional description of ISIS propaganda: broadcast killings designed to send a message, strike fear and create a social media spectacle. Will almost certainly be repurposed by online terror cells

The Center for Biological Diversity has been an effective plaintiff in several lawsuits that have impeded or reversed some of the Trump Administration's harms (e.g. dismantling "Alligator Alcatraz"). Dedicated staff, worth your support.

When some comics became intangible online, paper became *visible* to artists again, leading to beautiful new paper comics. Now, when some "art" becomes inhuman, *we* become visible to ourselves again. What beautiful new *human* art might be the result?

Gerrard Winstanley, who died 350 years ago today: “Was the earth made to preserve a few covetous, proud men to live at ease, and for them to bag and barn up the treasures of the earth from others, that these may beg or starve in a fruitful land; or was it made to preserve all her children?”

One advantage of ordering direct from the publisher (U of Chicago Press in this case): Gary Nabhan's latest arrived nearly a month before the official pub date. This should be a fun read: it mixes natural history with--well, let's just say there's an entry for Sand Trout and another for La Corua.

So Bluesky is doing Appreciation for Canadian Culture today? Count this American in. My offering: the incomparable Acadian folksinger Édith Butler. I might have first encountered her listening to Radio Canada on shortwave in the late '70s. Bought this in NYC or Québec, can't recall.

I was just remembering my first "word processor", a thermal electric typewriter/printer with a 16-character LCD screen, the Brother EP-20 sold in the early 1980s. It was small, light, and quiet, perfect for sticking in a backpack and taking to the library. typewriterdatabase.com/1983-brother...

It printed on a roll of thermal paper. I used it to take hundreds of notes working on my Ph.D. dissertation at UC San Diego; if memory serves I would cut them to size such that they could be pasted using rubber cement onto file cards and stored for reference.
