Commentators keep saying that this is the first time that the Conservatives have been elected in B.C. in almost 100 years. This is not really true. The Conservatives under different labels (Socreds, Liberals) have functionally ruled B.C. for the majority of the past 75 years.

It would be nice if news headlines/reports stopped saying “BC Conservatives win first majority in a century” when the BC Liberals and Socreds won plenty of majorities and were, you know, conservative.

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

We are watching a coup d’état attempt unfold in real time in Brazil. I’m consumed by desperation.

In the end, the percentage gap in the popular vote between the NDP and Conservatives was roughly 5% greater than in most of the polls. So the question is, was this due to sampling and measurement error? Or did the undecided overwhelming break for the Conservatives?

FWIW, in B.C., in the polls I've seen, there seems to be a pretty consistent 4 to 5 percentage point gap between the Conservatives and the NDP. And the higher the Green number, the lower the NDP number.

I was listening to a national CBC radio show. (I was listening in Vancouver. )The host said there was a couple of important events happening in the next few days. These were, the Toronto municipal election, and the Israeli election.

Hmm. I was reliably informed by economists of the highest pedigree that we, as the small country, had zero hope of having any tariffs reversed and should just sit down to 'make a deal'. Another "L" for Team Captitulation.

If Putin accepts Trump's invitation to attend the G20 summit, then whether or not European leaders have the spine and good sense to boycott it will be a historical benchmark for trans-Atlantic ties and global affairs more generally. The choice is between painful but salutary rupture or irrelevance.

The stereotype is that old people are conservative and young people are more left wing. In this B.C. election, young people are more likely to indicate a preference to vote Conservative. Older people report they are more likely to vote NDP. Same was true last provincial election.

Lowen said that Eby and Doerkson didn't have the courage to stand up to Big Grocery. But that's not really fair to Eby, after all he insulted Mr. Big Grocery on his 98th birthday.

The Mango menance, from the Guardian: Donald Trump complained Friday about not winning the Nobel peace prize for 2026, a year in which he started a war with Iran.

“The United States of America, represented by me as your president, should have received the Nobel peace prize, but didn’t. And this is an indelible stain on the country of Norway, and those people that made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision,” Trump said.

“The Nobel peace prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilization,” Trump went on. “We will not forget, Norway, that you didn’t give this prize.”

This is how we should see these magnificant animals, not hauled up on a boat or in fillets on a slab. We should no more catch or kill this rare and stunning megafauna than we should trap or kill tigers or whales. Here are some more of Rupert’s photos from yesterday, with his kind permission.
