Oh boy. Okay. I am going to respond earnestly and genuinely, because I totally understand why this would seem like a contrary concept! Many librarians, educators, and guardians want to encourage their kids to read more, but don't see how graphic novels might help. Let's talk about it!

"We want to increasing reading by introducing more books with pictures." Go ahead and tell me how I've got it all wrong.

That museum is a gem! If you're heading all the way to Akita, pairing it with a visit to Kakunodate's samurai district makes the trip worthwhile. Our Japan guide has tips on getting there and other off-the-beaten-path spots.

I had these replica genga pages from “Tokyo Tarareba Girls” and “Princess Jellyfish” by Akiko Higashimura that i got at Yokote Masuda Manga Museum, so glad i brought them to ANYC to get them signed by sensei

If you’re planning a trip to Japan, visiting the Yokote Masuda Manga Museum takes a little work — it’s in Akita Prefecture, quite far from Tokyo. But it’s got an amazing collection of original manga pages manga-museum.com

Motojiro artist on the Captain Underpants manga was very interested in US kids, their interests and activities. It’s a real collab between Dav Pilkey and Motojiro. It has been a big hit says Saylor Muth is excited by new generations getting into manga as they continue the program #manga #scholastic

Unico was originally published left to right and in color - Tezuka wanted it to reach a worldwide audience. Kids have responded big says Sattin, - a bunch of boys even told him “Unico is pretty cool.” Unico has done well worldwide says Saylor. Volume 3 debuted at #121 on USA Today bestseller list.

Tezuka created so much - there were a ton of concepts for Unico, says Sattin, so they took characters like the East Wind and the West Wind in the original and took them in a different direction and gave them new life.

Here is Nikolai Muth, Sam Sattin, David Saylor and @debaoki.bsky.social talking about adapting classics for manga. There are a lot of problems finding manga suitable for US kids - besides the inappropriate content sometimes “nothing happens” said Aoki. #scholastic #manga

In a meeting at Tuttle-Mori ages ago, when Ogino found out I love Moomin, she took me to "the Moomin room", an incredible space full of Moomin merch bc they were the licensing agent, and filled a tote bag with treasures for me to take home. I've loved her ever since.
