2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Benjamin Britten (1913-1976). Peter Grimes, the Serenade and War Requiem are among my all time favourite works. This year I'm going to try to listen to every Britten piece, in the order he wrote them. Why not join me? #TheCompleteBritten

And the sad little dance in the pub turning into the furious roar of the crowd setting up the *second* manhunt. By the way, the soliloquy you mentioned (Great Bear & Pleiades) is centered on an E that is murder on most tenors because of the tessitura, but fitted Pears' unusual voice perfectly. end/

I saw Skelton at ENO twice and then at the Proms (I was near the front of the prommers so the sound was incredible) and the entire performance was arguably even stronger for being done with no set and about 3 props including a rope. Then I saw it in concert… www.thestage.co.uk/opinion/davi...

Also this week: it's #Eroica time, but this time with a difference. Master pianist Igor Levit launches his own label, No Silence Records, with Liszt's transcription of Beethoven's mighty symphony, inspired in part by Bonaparte, and coupled with Schoenberg's Ode to Napoleon.

Plus a brace of miraculous Bartók, a pair of Still symphonies, and Andris Nelsons' "long awaited" (according to the publicity) Mahler cycle. Have you been waiting for it? No, neither have I. Click on the link above to enjoy them all on your favourite streaming service.

To whoever tipped me off about this, you were absolutely right. What a voice Beth Taylor has! Tremendous singing in a programme that beguiles from beginning to end (the piano playing ain't bad either). Record-of-the-year level music making ❤️💙🖤 #NewReleases2026 #205

Fantastic tenor Nathan Vale has been involved in a serious accident leaving him with multiple severe injuries - two broken legs, a broken arm, ribs & collarbone. While the outlook for his recovery is positive, he and his family face a substantial loss of income. Please consider helping if you can.

While the book is definitely picking up readers now, the audiobook still feels a bit neglected. Great to see a few people checking it out. Justin Avoth, who read it, is a rare talent.

I loved this audiobook: libro.fm/audiobooks/9... It's so many things: funny, clever, cozy, sad, nostalgic, and occasionally magical. It does deal with grief, though. I thought it was comforting as I'm dealing with my own grief, but your mileage is definitely going to vary.

Wait, is Radio 4 Extra going? Even given however residuals work in the streaming/DAB age, it surely must cost less to run than a dehumidifier?

Happy #NewReleaseFriday! It's late again thanks to my 165-mile weekend cycling trip where I beheld the sea, itself, along the Lancashire coast in glorious autumn sunshine - perfect mental preparation for Vaughan Williams's breakthrough choral blockbuster! www.tunemymusic.com/share/6HrCJc...

Also this week: orchestral works by always-intriguing Florent Schmitt (1870-1958); the two sides of Sergei Prokofiev in his most savage ballet and his genial Classical Symphony, and much much more. Click on the link above to get my playlist on your favourite streaming service.

So much to do and so little time means #NewReleaseFriday will have to wait till Monday, but why not check out last week's lovely Luise Adolpha Le Beau release in the meantime?

Mr. Symphonist@deeplyclassical.bsky.social

Happy #NewReleaseFriday! Luise Adolpha Le Beau studied with Clara Schumann, Franz Lachner, and Josef Rheinberger, and met both Brahms & Liszt. I really enjoyed her other music I've heard so far, so I'm excited to hear her only symphony. Have a listen here 🔽 www.tunemymusic.com/share/GIJNRJ...

I heard Zemlinsky's Lyric Symphony at the 1988 Proms, then bought this record, and I've been hopelessly in love with it ever since ❤️💛🖤
