Fall means the birds are using my jerry-rigged birdbath again! and this year it's closer to the window for peak candids!

"Conservation biology is a science with a time limit, with the clock ticking faster as the human population continues to increase... I believe future generations will find it blankly incomprehensible that we are deveoting so little money and effort to study these questions." Robert May 1988

4 minutes just after 7am made a big difference. I carefully put out a woodlouse rescued from the kitchen sink: dark, zero birds. Then ... light in the clouds, tens & tens of jackdaws arriving post-overnight roost dispersal! ๐Ÿ˜„ #JackdawsAutumnFirstBirdReport

#3rdBOMD walked after me returning from putting out the recycling โ™ป๏ธ. A young, timid wood pigeon that took up a camouflaged position on grey standing against pinkish bricks of the house. โค๏ธ No apparent welfare issue. FBsOMD were 2 rattle & chatter magpies on side of a house roof.

In Devonshire goldenrod is called โ€˜farewell-to-summerโ€™ because it blooms from August through September. It is said to grow where secret hoards of gold are hidden, and if it unexpectedly appears near a dwelling, then the inhabitants will surely have good fortune. #FlowersOnFriday

Two herring gulls were FBsOMD. They were making laborious zigzag progress towards the S-W whilst a fresh wind was blowing mostly, I think, from slightly north of due west. #Firstbirdofmyday #Whatsyours

One of the first birds of my day today was this crow, picturesquely perched in front of an early-morning rainbow! ๐ŸŒˆ Perhaps he was trying to tell me to make a fresh start! #FirstBirdOfMyDay

Flyover by a lone, silent black-headed gull. Differential reflections from the low sun angle during the wingbeats gilding a rather stately progress inland. ๐Ÿ˜„ #Firstbirdofmyday #Whatsyours

#FirstBirdOfMyDay: Northern cardinal making a lot of chirpy noise at me, but uninterested in the sunflower seeds I put out.

FBOMD a carrion crow flying away from the woods, straight as an arrow, on a silent dawn journey. Too early though for the wood pigeons to watch how this big corvid species envisages that an avian 'morning mission' ought to be flown! ๐Ÿ˜† #Firstbirdofmyday #Whatsyours

#FirstBirdOfMyDay: Northern cardinal. Normally timid, our yearlong drought plus extended heatwave has forced them to overcome their fear. Now they are already gathered when I arrive with seeds, suet and water.

Mississippi kites were getting an early start on flight training, calling "Look here, look here!" So I did. And two silent European starlings flew across my line of vision to be #FirstBirdOfMyDay. ๐Ÿ˜†

Rainbow lorikeets were the only bright spot in the sky this morning after a night of steady rain. Grey sky, grey eucalyptus bark and grey/green leaves then little bursts of sunshine on the breasts of the lorikeets. #Firstbirdofmyday #Whatsyours

#FirstBirdOfMyDay could, in context, only have been an intrepid herring gull! An exceedingly brief glimpse of a white feathery object, the size of gull, which disappeared as soon as I became aware of it, possibly from physical contact with the apex of a single storey rear extension.

I sat on the office fire escape for ten minutes after lunch today watching a sparrow build a nest out of discarded circuit wire and crumpled receipt scraps. Every overcomplicated product roadmap I drafted last week felt immediately absurd.

That feeling of "awe & wonder" might be humanity's most underrated survival mechanism โ€” there's something profound about how direct contact with nature rewires our brains differently than any screen ever could. This generation is going to need that connection more than any before them.

A small bird silhouette on the ridge tiles low on the roof opposite became identifiable as a male house sparrow. He chirruped, then moved along the guttering. The daylight caught his form and I could see his fuscous head & neck as he headed for one of his roof cavities. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜„ #firstbirdofmyday

A Greek myth tells that Paeon, physician to the gods, healed Pluto when he was injured during the Trojan War. Aesculapius, god of healing, became jealous, and vowed to kill Paeon, but Pluto saved him by transforming him into the flower that had healed him, naming it โ€˜Paeoniaโ€™.

This is an image with a resemblance to the early day sun light sighting of FBOYD on Thursday 26th, hey @dauphne.bsky.social? Helps those of us this side of the Atlantic who have never seen a Northern cardinal appreciate what it's like seeing them! ๐Ÿ˜„ [Picked up from @lilithl.bsky.social repost. ๐Ÿ˜Š]

On the day this photo was taken, the male northern cardinal was the first bird to show up to the feeders after I had filled them. He was trying to get there before the Grackles and European Starlings took over. ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿชถ #birds #nature #birdwatching #backyardbird #birdnerd

Although briefly the male house sparrow was on his own, perched on a firm woody hawthorn sprig, FBsOMD were truly a loyal breeding pair. The female emerged from the hedge interior, was looking all the time at the male, and they then flew a very short distance & went back into cover.

2nd consecutive Sunday I saw, close-up, the leucistic male blackbird (1st seen in early 2024) with a territory of a sports club (out of use) bowling green & railway embankment . You know @dauphne.bsky.social I always immediately think of the late Elton, the American robin visitor to your backyard!
