As we transition into winter, folks keep their windows and doors closed much more & outdoor air cannot be taken for granted. If you're not sure how you get fresh air into your home, now's a good time to check. If you don't have a ventilation system, that's not good. #IAQ #ventilation

Quick rule of thumb for the amount of fresh air you need in a home (in CFM): 7.5 * (Nbr + 1) + 0.01 * A where A = area of the home and Nbr = # of bedrooms So, a 1,500 square foot home w 3 bedrooms needs: 7.5 * (3 + 1) + 0.01 * 1,500 = 7.5*4 + 15 = 45 CFM So you set your fan to run at ~50 CFM

This will produce fairly crummy ventilation, but it's better than nothing. And the one big upside is you'll have significantly less mold in your bathroom. The next best option is have a mechanical contractor install a simple supply system. I'm happy to walk through options if anyone is interested.

If you rent, you should ask whether there is a ventilation system. If there isn't one, you may just want to leave your bathroom fan running part of the day to at least pull some fresh air into the unit. If you own, look into your options. The cheapest/easiest option is a multi-speed bathroom fan.

A good $250 bathroom fan replacement will get you ventilation on a budget. It's not elegant, but it works okay - if your home is old, the fan sucks air in through cracks and crevices. You can set the fan to run at a low level continuously and kick onto a higher speed when you use the bathroom.

Californians, please talk to everyone you know about the insurance commissioner race! Many folks don’t know who to vote for, since both candidates are Dems. And plenty of people don’t understand that Jane Kim’s proposal would incentivize high fire risk & have urban folks subsidize high risk areas.

Good read for the #electricity grid nerds... "When planners used simplified formulas like the reserve margin, the math model designed a centralized grid... However, when the researchers forced the computer to use rigorous, probabilistic risk modeling, it built a highly distributed network."

It’s that time of year. Removing the summer window screens and putting in window inserts for winter. Below is a short thread explaining window inserts. This is a “before” pic of one of the inserts prior to putting it in. #energy-efficiency

Short thread re: an under-discussed #energyefficiency technology: custom window inserts. The windows in our old home have tremendous charm (see below). Sadly, they're about as poor-performing as windows can be. ~10 years ago a friend told me about window inserts and I'm definitely a convert.

It’s time to replace the dirty old air filter on your heating/cooling system with a nice new clean one. #IAQ The usual tips: - use a MERV rated filter, ideally MERV-12+ - make sure the filter completely fills the housing, so air doesn’t go around it - buy in bulk, it’s much cheaper

The SHADE Act has been passed into law today by Mayor Lurie! Over the past 10 years, over 2000 units of housing have been blocked or delayed because NIMBYs said the housing would cast a "shadow". So we're done letting red tape cast shade over our housing future.

At first I thought it was weird that the words graft and grift are so similar. Then @merriam-webster.com clarified that grift is probably just a variation on the word graft, and other sources suggest the variation came out of “American carnival culture”, which is fun! Anyway, you should vote.

I know it's fashionable to claim that private equity is just a bogeyman, but they're awful. "Veterinary care is appealing to investors for several reasons. ... If a pet owner can afford to pay for the care a vet recommends for an animal they consider part of their family, they will."

Just reviewed a "Texas wrap" project in San Diego. It's great that there are 300+ units coming to the area, but gawd these buildings are boring and anti-social in their design. And sooo much parking.

What the…? Do people actually use paper napkins for everyday meals? We use cloth napkins at every meal, not because it’s “fancy” or we’re “worth it” (wtf?) but because the alternative is crazy wasteful.

Good journalism. I’ve included a gift article link. Main point: phenylephrine does *not* work when ingested (for example, in Sudafed PE). It does work as a nasal spray. Also: pseudoephedrine *does* still work. You have to ask the pharmacist for it, but it’s worth it.
