I asked Siri to “play the latest Nia Archives album on Tidal” and the response was “Now playing ‘Emotional Yuunglist’ on Tidal” like it was pronounced like Carl Jung

Code that works at a point in time is mostly uninteresting. What matters is building structures to ensure code stays correct over time. That to me is the essence of engineering in software

Wanna see my smilin’ face illustrating a culture-war opinion piece on page 27 of the Rolling Stone

Left positive comments about the new confraflow bike lane in my neighborhood on the city FB post about it, and a bike lane hater with a motorcycle profile banner image told me to “be careful” going “the wrong way down the street”

33⅓ but it's for TV shows: which one are you writing? (you're allowed to mention some runner[s]-up)

A fundamental problem with "oh it's useful for coding" is that "generating more software faster" has, if anything, negative marginal utility in itself. The world is not suffering from a software shortage. The world is suffering from a software quality crisis, which LLMs seem more likely to worsen.

look, as someone who has literally attended a microbrew meetup on a pirate ship, I don’t know where anyone would get the idea that it would be a sad scene. it’s obviously a rip-roaring, jolly time

honestly correct that this site has a dogpile problem but it’s still funny to complain about it after coming out swinging like this

I wonder if the people losing their minds over NYC-run grocery stores know about New Hampshire state liquor stores.

If you combine Alden Ehrenreich’s performances in Solo and in the new Jeremy O. Harris-directed Carly Rae Jepsen video (“Don’t Leave Me on the Dance Floor”) then you get Sandy Kreja from CJ Cherryh’s “Merchanter’s Luck” and not giving it a film adaptation is leaving a lot of money on the table

I also love how this video is in clear conversation with Robyn’s iconic performance in “Call Your Girlfriend”

down so bad for someone that you have to sweat out your feelings on the dancefloor, except the dancefloor is hyperspace

It’s going to be something when US ratification of Geneva I & II and signing the ICC treaty becomes a condition of peace talks

Dewb@dewb.bsky.social

An additional non-negotiable requirement I’d like to see socialized for ‘26-28 candidates for US Senate & President: supporting the overdue ratification of Geneva Protocols I & II

I was a bit confused by the reviews of the Slate truck that argued “but you can get a vehicle with a lot more features for only slightly more money!” Yes, but people are beginning to want *less* and are willing to pay more to get it. And this sort of offering is why.

Wow people are really unfamiliar with the distinct pleasures of simultaneously enjoying Nolan movies as cinematic spectacle while also enjoying picking apart their paper-thin intellectual architectures, a phenomenon that is now old enough to vote

I cannot rest from discourse. I will see that film again tomorrow. I will drink life to the lees. Again I will enjoy greatly, will suffer greatly, both with those that love me, and in Pleasantville NY. I am become a meme. Film showing: burnsfilmcenter.org/booking/the-...

*standing up on the plane* Wonder was the grace of the country. Any action could be justified by that: the wonder it was rooted in. Period followed period, and finally the wonder was that things could be built so big. Bridges, skyscrapers, fortunes, all having a life first in the marketplace…

we are absolutely missing a critical culture right now, it's been subsumed by fandom, and reading a knowledgeable, high brow critique of a film like Emily Wilson wrote is just so *refreshing*

Moby Dick is simultaneously the Odyssey of the 19th Century and the Oppenheimer of the 19th Century

Andrew Pope@andrewpope.bsky.social

lol He should take on Moby Dick next. That may be the nudge I need to get to it.

I don’t think a Nolan Moby Dick would be a particularly literate or deep adaptation, but it would be deftly condensed, cinematic, and fun to talk about, just like his Odyssey

I forget who first said this, but whaling was a technology boom, 1850s New Bedford was Silicon Valley, and Melville was a tech reporter
