I don't post a lot about work here. That said, I've just revived my blog to post about the brouhaha at the Office for National Statistics. I know some of my mutuals share my interest in data, governance, and change management and might enjoy this. heplanningblog.blogspot.com

The Scottish Horse were established in the early twentieth century because the Boer War showed that the British Army didn't have enough mounted troops. They didn't get the sabres you can see in this photo until the First World War showed that mounted soldiers needed to carry swords.

Just caught up with this piece by @dsquareddigest.bsky.social. Dan is always worth reading, but in this case I think 'inexperienced ministers make silly mistakes' feels like a simpler solution. There's nothing very new in that.
I ask - why is the government taking so many silly L's on judicial reviews? backofmind.substack.com/p/three-time...
For my PhD I transcribed soldier's names from King John's Prest rolls to try to understand who was serving, how often, and in exchange for what recompense. Index cards in those days though.
A blast from my past - the Medieval Soldier database takes nearly 300,000 military service records from 1369-1453 and makes them available as a searchable database. An invaluable resource for understanding medieval warfare, society and the English medieval state. Learn more in the link. 🗃️
Fond memories of this site. When I worked at UEL my eldest was a tiny baby and she's at Uni now.
Here's a #HigherEducationPostcard of the West Ham Technical Institute, which is now the Stratford Campus of the University of East London And it has the most fabulous tiles inside! If you like this image, please retweet it - remember, BlueSky has #NoAlgorithm
Really striking how small this British 'super university' will be. Compare it to some provincial European university like Padua and you can't but be a little thoughtful. wonkhe.com/blogs/the-fi...
This is true, but I think (and it follows from a point @timclare.bsky.social makes upthread) that co-operative games require less co-operation than competitive ones. That's certainly why I used to seek them out for my kids.
The distinction is a false one. All games are cooperative. The very act of agreeing to & honouring rules, & the deeper compact, of temporarily engaging in the roleplay that the drama taking place on the table is *important* - this is a fundamentally cooperative enterprise.

The Fifth Frontier War has come to the Spinward Marches. The Zhodani are the aggressors, but do they know something the Imperials don't? And what will your Travellers do when they are embroiled in the war? www.mongoosepublishing.com/collections/... #ttrpg #TravellerRPG

New video essay! "Rules As Play: The Human Art of Writing, Learning, and Breaking Rules" explores what rules are, how they are taught, and how this shapes our interaction with games. youtu.be/VDjK1jX93yM
Came across this kind of by accident today, but loved every word. Especially 'While those kinds of teams are filled with performance, not much of it is very productive.' medium.com/swlh/inside-...
