Supporting trans rights does not mean opposing women's rights. Supporting women's rights does not mean opposing trans rights. Please think about whose interests it serves to turn those who should be allies against misogyny and transphobia into each others' enemies instead. #LGBWithTheT #always

But also, isn't it increasingly toxic because we frame immigration as something inherently negative, and forget it also brings value. And freedom of movement is a reciprocal right, so everyone can benefit from it.

You can't say "The debate around immigration has become increasingly toxic, with racist rhetoric and intimidation becoming disturbingly normalised" and then immediately follow up with "Reopening freedom of movement risks reigniting divisions". You just told us the divisions are already aflame!

“The perception that promises can subsequently be revisited by a political establishment removed from the realities of working communities has left lasting scars”, writes Labour MP @melanieonnmp.bsky.social 🗣️ EU free movement debate risks undermining voter trust www.politics.co.uk/2026/10/mela...

What you could say, as a Labour MP, would be something like "Reopening freedom of movement might hand racists another stick to hit us with, so if we are serious about it as an aim we need to ensure that we tackle racism head-on instead of excusing it as legitimate concerns like we have been doing."

It's not like this is a new or complicated political argument. The far right in the UK, from Reform and TPUK to Restore and Patriotic Alternative, has as its core aim the normalisation of racism and other forms of hate. Every time you talk about these things as legitimate concerns you help them.

I mean it's all ludicrous, but did you notice he referred to "Darth Bader" here?

*man of the people* Billionaire @SecScottBessent tries to make Obama seem out of touch by pretending he has ever gone to a Cheesecake Factory before in his life LOL 😂 These guys are so ridiculous

Incredible how deeply the United States has debased itself by putting people who are the embodiment of ignorant racism in positions of power. What this particular ignorant racist apparently doesn't realise is if you write that number down as 500,000,000 you're actually using *Arabic numerals*.

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

A leaflet through the door from a boiler cover company, auspiciously close to when our boiler cover needs to be renewed, which offers a raft of tempting savings offers, underneath which the small print says "Prices based on our £95 excess products, and savings based on our £0 excess products." Pretty dire news in the middle of Scotland's housing crisis. Between April 2025 and March 2026, a further 18,028 new homes were added to Scotland's housing stock, 8% fewer than the previous year and the lowest since 2014-15 (excluding the COVID-19 period).

Sounds like these other parents had Genuine Concerns™. Turns out the gender critical campaign handbook can be applied to any situation where bigoted people want to control the lives of others.

I spoke to the mom of the 3-year-old soccer star who was left "thinking he did something wrong" after a league official called police "due to a disturbance between parents" The youth sports league said they launched a review and reached out to the family

Is this weird, patronisingly spoon-fed presentation typical of US TV news? Or is this programme intended for children?

Murphy doing what he always does here, offering a credulous response to proposals which are by any reasonable standard ludicrous, like everything his Scottish Currency Group does. Don't let anybody tell you indy folk have a credible plan for mortgages and pensions based off this sort of headline.

Richard Murphy@richardjmurphy.bsky.social

Scottish independence could transform mortgages and pensions in Scotland www.thenational.scot/politics/266... Me in The National this morning.

This is easily on a par with the very worst of what The Telegraph has to offer; The National get away with it often. It's extraordinary. One part of the plan for trying to ensure a Scottish currency doesn't screw every Scottish mortgage holder is *fixing house prices in perpetuity*. Seriously.

And you just know if somebody pointed out the myriad problems with the whole idea they would retreat onto the well-worn ground of "Okay but this is just one possibility, we're not saying it has to happen". Because the point, always, isn't *having* a plan, it's *sounding* like you have a plan.

We welcome Lula’s victory in Brazil. But we should also not pretend that narrow victories over the Far Right are causes for major celebration. Politics is in a dangerous place.

It’s just gaslighting now. I see Labour are still tolerating undeclared private donors funding judicial reviews against trade unions by their elected members.

Bridget's never going to believe it when she finds out what this Labour government's women and equality minister did to trans people.

Bridget Phillipson MP@bphillipsonmp.bsky.social

There are forces on the Right trying to divide our society with fear and hatred. The Labour Government is determined to defeat them: to build a Britain of inclusion, tolerance, and compassion.

This BBC News article bothsides things by *randomly bringing Tonia Antoniazzi into play and extensively quoting her handwringing* just days after she literally posted that she objected to a trans person simply existing and being in her presence.

If you’re wondering why so many SA survivors don’t report, Amy Acton reported when she was 9-years-old and now it’s being used against her by Vivek Ramaswamy in an attack ad. That’s why.

So Scottish Borders Council has *quadrupled* parking charges in Galashiels. From 50p for 2 hours it's now £1 for 1 hour. That's a hell of an increase! (And yes, I realise Edinburgh pals will be laughing at this with some justification...)

I’m trying to square this with the funding for FWS which stripped all trans people (inc those born with female reproductive organs) of their previously rights in the 2010 Equality Act.

One thing to note about Rowling's latest essay is that she says there has been a marked downturn in people accessing her anti-trans legal fund. She puts this down to more businesses seeing things her way, but the truth is that the "gender critical" movement has lost a lot of cases in the last year.

The same people who oppose age-appropriate sex education for children, which is proven to help children identify and avoid abusive situations, also oppose public information explaining consent. It's almost as if people on the reactionary right want children to be more vulnerable to sexual assault.

The Journal@thejournal.ie

Adverts run by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre looking at consensual hugs between children and their grandparents has been suspended after criticism. Aontú's Peader Tóibín called the ad "bonkers", as he urged a "need to build resilience" among children. www.thejournal.ie/grandparents...

Here we have someone saying children need to build resilience while literally opposing efforts to improve children's resilience. What he really means, of course, is not that children should be resilient but that they should be subservient and default to doing what older people tell them.

Royal British Legion has launched its 2026 poppy appeal, and Reform politicians have decided that's the firing gun for the annual game of poppy policing. Always amusing that it's the fascists who want everyone to be forced to wear a symbol in remembrance of when we last beat the fascists.

A few years after the first Pride Scotland I was being chatted up by a chap who asked if I'd been to Pride that year, and then proceeded to tell me he'd been closely involved in setting up the original event. I hadn't the heart to tell him I was the very worst person to try that line on. 😂

Bottom line on Jackdaw is that it's a rational decision but a terrible signal. Both of those things are important, and those who endorse the rational decision need to avoid dismissing the terrible signal. It has to be acknowledged and explicitly addressed. Not seeing enough of that from government.

Trade unions would be up in arms, the SNP would have a field day pointing out that Michael Marra supports Rosebank but had been overridden by the UK government, and there would be a genuine impact on North East jobs. But blocking Rosebank would still be the right thing to do.

The Energy Secretary has strongly hinted at agreeing with that logic, but the Chancellor is likely to prioritise the revenue that Rosebank would bring in. Unfortunately the man in the middle who has the final say doesn't have a great track record for prioritising what is right over what is popular.

Not seeing enough of that from government.

It would not be rational to approve Rosebank, however. That's just another oilfield for export and cannot be justified with the same logic. So one way to reinforce the rational Jackdaw argument while recognising that it sends the wrong signal would be to quickly move to blocking Rosebank.
