Transphobia doesn’t win elections : redux. Over on Twitter (RIP) I made a thread showing the evidence that transphobia doesn’t win elections. Now, with Andy Burnham playing to GC crowd and after the devolved national elections and English locals, seems a good time to revisit it. 1/24

Isn’t it time for us all to admit that the markets are just wrong? We’ve seen what happens when you elect right-wing crackpots. Trump has destroyed the US economy. Liz Truss almost did for ours. Yet every time one is defeated ‘the markets’ rend their garments and wail.

Labour now briefing young people won't get the same minimum wage uplift. Even Starmer didn't break this pledge. Workers rights mean same rights, pay & conditions, same rate for the same job. What does this Labour government have against young people? inews.co.uk/news/politic...

The idea that Russia is about to come through the Baltic or Norwegian Sea and attack the UK just isn’t credible. Even if the war with Ukraine ended tomorrow they would be in a holding and recovery pattern for some time. So why prepare for a war that isn’t at all likely? 4 reasons…

3. It’s a great excuse TO spend on all sorts of white elephant defence contracts. This is important as it’s something they can offer donors who might normally be more interested in donating to the Tory Party.

4. It’s an excuse not to try and reverse any of the damage they did under Starmer, which would embarrass those cabinet members still in position (incl Streeting of course). Care about trans rights? Palestine? Democratic freedom? Masked fascist thugs? Don’t you know there’s a pretend war on?

1. Wes Streeting would dearly love to fight a war as it would make him Very Important and being Very Important is all that is dear to him. This way, when war doesn’t come, he can claim to have prepared so well they dare not come - a pretend victory to a pretend war.

2. It is a great excuse not to spend on welfare. Labour can hand-wring about difficult choices while avoiding any choices the captains of industry/AI CEOs/right-wing media doesn’t like.

Is it? Is that what the Labour Government is doing? Because it doesn’t feel like it. I don’t look at their record in office and say, “Well that’s a serious attempt to build a Britain of inclusion, tolerance and compassion.”

Bridget Phillipson MP@bphillipsonmp.bsky.social

There are forces on the Right trying to divide our society with fear and hatred. The Labour Government is determined to defeat them: to build a Britain of inclusion, tolerance, and compassion.

Proscribing Palestine Action and not Turning Point UK. Letting Wes Streeting ruin trans healthcare. Appointing someone two cross-party committees said was no good to run the EHRC. None of this strikes me as inclusion, tolerance and compassion.

Currently wondering what message the UK govt thought it was sending by dressing up the Minister for Net Zero in a literal Shell logo.

Yeah, that headline would be more accurate without the last word. Take away the word ‘campaigners’ and it would be perfect.

This is not about "climate campaigners" and framing it this way is totally ridiculous This is a blow to the planet and us all

Today's decision by Labour to approve new drilling in the North Sea is climate vandalism. It's a betrayal of all of our futures, and Labour has abandoned all credibility in the fight against climate change. This is a victory for Shell over the people. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cw...

Journalists openly gloating at a secret wrecking campaign to put this website out of business, orchestrated in secret between party officials and media outlets. And the wild part is, theres no need to brag and show off. They’ve won, they got what they wanted. But they can’t help themselves.

Is it racist, though? If the statement is so outrageous, you’d think it would be very simple to rebut. And yet, nobody has tried: they just point and screech like Donald Sutherland in Bodysnatchers, and never address the question. I wonder why nobody wants to do that?

The left can't advocate any sort of meaningful change without enraging the media. It is utterly unavoidable. We can win unprecedented levels of support by taking on hard fights and having the courage of our convictions. The Green party is more successful than ever because we've understood this.

At last! I’ve been looking for a car that can deal with the 180 degree roads we have all over Edinburgh. Makes taking the bus a bloody nightmare.

A ridiculous situation created by a ridiculous decision from a ridiculous Home Secretary under a ridiculous Prime Minister. Will Andy Burnham show he’s not ridiculous and reverse this state of affairs? (Answer : no)

If the BBC wanted to do some actual journalism they could look into whether individual donors were behind Scottish Labour producing such a transphobic manifesto last Holyrood election.

Reminds me of the Daily Mail trying to claim that Edinburgh had no-go areas for non-Muslims and everyone in Edinburgh laughed.

Gavin Newsom backs measure to kill the billionaire tax and ban future wealth taxes Gov. Gavin Newsom isn't just fighting the billionaire tax. He's backing Prop. 42, which would ban future wealth taxes in California, too.

Greens increased their vote share in Holborn and St Pancras by 20%. If Reform had done that the press would be telling Burnham to shoot foreigners on sight to appease them, but because a leftist party did it the leader’s facing calls to resign because it wasn’t good enough.

Yeah, the Burnham bounce is real but I don’t think it’s going to last long. Certainly not three years.

Natacha@natacha.bsky.social

Just like we warned you. Andy Burnham wants to force EVERYONE to undergo ID checks to access all social media. This is Starmer’s Digital ID by the back door.

Yes, it is, but to do that you have to get elected and for Greens being bold is part of that. I’m not saying that there were no problems with the Zionism is Racism motion (though I do agree that it is - how can a colonial project not be racist?) but the ming vase strategy isn’t us.

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

Some people here don't seem to have understood the purpose of a political party. It's not the same as a protest movement. It is a vehicle designed to get into government, to change legislation and make a material difference to the lives of people at home and abroad.
