Roosevelt seems to have had quite a bit of correspondence with Kuno Meyer, and in a couple letters expressly thanks him for copies of his works.

- Such an unusual name, Eisenkot (iron-dung). How did your family come by it? - We changed it in the nineteenth century. - You changed it TO Eisenkot?!? - Yeah, used to be ⴰⵣⵏⴽⵯⴹ (Aznkʷḍ “gazelle”)!

I'm not criticizing those who are showcasing the accomplishments of scientists, artists, and writers to debunk RFK Jr.'s comments but I think it's also important to treat them not as ignorance, but as the outright malice they are. He made those comments to claim a US citizen is unfit for the Senate.

Not quite. But we are about the same distance in time from the Cruel Empire of Tsan-Chan (“three thousand years hence” from 1919 in “Beyond the Wall of Sleep”) as we are from the composition of the Odyssey.

RIP, Walter Koenig.

Jesse Thorn@jessethorn.bsky.social

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

The Congo Basin had some of the most unique forms of indigenous proto-urbanism featuring near-grid-like settlement patterns; straight streets over 40ft wide, and square houses built in parallel lines

AI proponents cling to the idea that the tech is going to enable boundless creativity, but I've seen what it enables; endless spam. It's enabled people without a single ounce of creativity in their bodies to make endless Balatro clones, genuinely no thoughts of their except Balatro but slop.

I keep trying to tell The Onion people that they need to buy out national review and turn into a parody site, but just don't tell Armond White, and keep publishing his reviews.

here, write it down so it’s easy to repeat: an illegitimate supreme court allowed an insurrectionist barred by the 14th amendment to take office and his pardons aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on

Freedom of movement is the most fundamental human right; everything else is built on top of it. The 20th century was a campaign to smother that freedom and we should not let it win

The evolution of the graduating class spelling out “seniors” combined with a year number in cups on the chain-link fence over the last five years: 23NIORS (ok, twenty-threeniors. nice.) 24NIORS (bit derivative) 25NIORS (fiveniors—really?) 26NIORS (what are we doing here…) 2ENIO7S (twoeniosevens???)

The Care Bears Movie around April 1985. I remember vividly the haunting face of the female evil spirit being squashed inside a magic book full of mysterious runes—that the nonursine protagonist Nicholas could apparently read. This, I now realize, may have had an effect on my personality.

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

There were 27 miles of rope used for rigging in Master & Commander. Modern rope naturally coils in the opposite direction of rope made during the Napoleonic wars. So the production paid a shop to make period accurate cordage.

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

Workers in the 17th-century Gold Coast (Ghana) earned about as much as those in Stockholm and Vienna, in real wages per hour These findings challenge the long-held presumption that Africa was historically poor compared to the rest of the world.
