sometimes i wonder if advertisers specifically select "only show this to people who have reported being actively disinterested" because its either that or no one is buying ad space anymore

watching Dragon Ball sometimes is like "oh wow, amazing that one of the most popular anime may have influenced anything ever" and then other times is just "oh neat there's a lot of furries in this scene"

i also like the Pilaf Gang, but im probably not being very original if i say they give "queer friend group" energy. a pointy eared goblin with blue skin, a furry, and a woman twice as tall as either of them is incredibly gay

as someone who only engages with the Dragon Ball franchise casually, watching the original series from the beginning isnt answering questions about what ive learned in passing, but is unexpectedly making more sense out of Adventure Time lol

i know this is real because i know Redman was sentenced to multiple years of community service and is likely in the woods to clean up stray trash

Work shopping some thumbnail ideas & this vhs filter looks like A.I. Guys, you WILL not make something look like vhs unless it comes from a VCR. Each deck has a distinct fingerprint that makes the format what it is. How is it we're in whatever year this is, & we still can't capture the look of VHS?

im gonna be loudly thinking about this for a while because i always thought gen 4 pokemon have a lot of digimon-like designs, but never considered neopets to be the other design variable

Keith J Carberry@carberry.deals

You can graph any creature on a ternary plot between pokemon, digimon and neopets. For instance Blastoise is mostly pokemon, a little digimon and not really any neopets. Lucario is still mostly pokemon but a lot more digimon in there. Gatomon is sort of right in the middle of all 3.

im realizing i think i liked the mario galaxy movie just fine because ive just assumed at this point Peach is the main character of these movies so anything not involving her is side plot stuff. it made my experience less chaotic than i was expecting from word of mouth.

i dont want to actually spoil a relatively new movie, but aside from the opening scene Mario's motivation is to help Peach however he can, and his posse helps him do so. Bowser Jr is the closest to an independent agent as a character, and even that is because of Bowser, who is motivated by Peach.

i may not love these movies, but i at least get them. but i can see why most people wouldnt watch the movie the same way because the scenes between cuts can be so short. you have to follow at least 3 perspectives throughout most of the movie and plot beats are shown rapidly. its definitely a lot.

like Mario is the main character in the first movie, but Peach guides the actual momentum at a point and Mario just reacts to situations he's put into, with the expectation it will help him get to his brother. the second movie's scenes that dont feature Peach feel more like spectacle than plot.

happened again when i paused an episode and came back! i sure do love modern anime streaming and its inability to support basic features for more than an hour at a time!

rewatching an anime in Japanese, the English subtitles wont load for some reason, and i keep swapping between French and Dutch because theyre available and i ALMOST understand some basics of them, but im realizing this is a little chaotic in my head lol

one of the worst and most terrifying pieces of information that ive learned is that in order to make friends you kind of have to be annoying to people. and if they like it thenn you can be friends. friendship is just when you both like when the other one is annoying

youtube really needs a setting to disable automatically using automated audio dubbing. like just let me pick the preference of "original audio" if it is that hard to let me opt out. or maybe stop forcing features onto people just so you can pretend people are using a feature more than they are.

to um actually myself, obviously using the jp title originates from localization originally taking months to years and fans of animation being able to exchange news or bootlegs early, but its continuation as simultaneous release became normal is definitely an effect of piracy. but that's history now

digilotlゝ( ' o ' )く@digilotl.bsky.social

dumb anime title discourse thought: the use of the jp title over the en title definitely arose from piracy, especially to help obscure/protect uploads, but it also used to come with a community that hated the official sub and almost any dub. but these days piracy is motivated much differently.

for fun, some preferences: -AoT > SnK (SNK was already a thing at the time) -BNHA = MHA (i just say My Hero) -Dun(geon)Meshi > Delicious in D (just wanted the DnD pun) -Mud Sludge >= Dorohedoro (i just like knowing the meaning) - > "Betrothed to My Sister's Ex" (tbf, a rough title to localize)

that last page was bait, go watch Betrothed to My Sister's Ex / Zutaboro Reijō wa Ane no Moto Konyakusha ni Dekiai Sareru! its a cute, almost classic fairytale-like romance and the prince is cool and has dark skin and is voiced by Daiki Hamano!

like it is still generally a good idea that if you like a series to support its official release when possible, but when one company has worked very hard to dominate the western market for anime it can be hard to be excited to continue supporting their business practices, especially with use of ai.

but also the post that kicked off this latest discourse is obviously a joke. and is definitely not about whether or not you call the latest anime by whatever name. fans and fandoms develop language in real time and unless your shorthand is trying to compete with something established then its nbd.

i looked at discourse for like 20 minutes, mostly learning how its just the same discourse about which wlw stories are valid or not, and feel like im living in that "this has been talked about extensively youre just 21" post. why do posts that make me feel like a grandma shake me up so much?

like i do get that its more of a "consensus will never be reached" type of beat, but its not even studying the greatest hits because we somehow never go further back than Utena and just hear seemingly experienced anime fans complain about the same five shows or whatever.

im just genuinely convinced that people dont know the difference between text and subtext. things spoken explicitly in the dialog are not subtext. the subtext would be reading for deeper meaning beyond. or do people mean something is open to interpretation when they are calling it subtext?

yes this is about Goodbye, Lara and ngl i knew when i saw a heavy amount of art shipping the two leads i knew there would be a divisive reaction when they very symbolic and grounded story has a mostly symbolic and grounded ending. sometimes effort is wasted on the masses? i dunno.

if youre reading this and think im right you should also watch Sparks of Tomorrow. Summer 2026 anime for me was that, Goodbye, Lara and the final arc of Digimon Beatbreak. mostly because ive had to save Kaiju Girl and Smoking Behind the Supermarket is being saved for binging with my partner.

it might also be that people dont understand what a romantic relationship looks like when one or more parties isnt very expressive. like yes in a visual medium PDA would be awesome but in real life, or a story trying to be grounded, many people just dont engage in PDA or physical gestures.

the only bait here is clickbait. the article even says Goodbye, Lara isnt queerbait, but knows that throwing the word around will get attention, regardless of how quickly people will not read anything other than the headline. can people just be disappointed without the disrespect?

Aftermath@aftermath.site

Goodbye, Lara isn't "losing chess to a dog" levels of queerbaiting, but it is just as disappointing: aftermath.site/goodbye-lara-y...

like i dropped the other big wlw anime this season because it just felt empty as an anime period. youre allowed to want something else, but dont throw a perfectly good anime into the shredder just because it wasnt your specific taste in queer media.
