Having to do any kind of testing of stuff on iOS -- *cough* Apple Pay *cough* -- will quickly show you that all of Apple's talk about what makes good UX "are for thee but not for me" Just atrocious UX and system design. Same for App Store Connect, etc. total disregard for users

People running technical interviews at work are saying some candidates are clearly using LLMs "let me think about that" and giving canned answers as they clearly read out the result. Unbelievable gall

Meant to start reading The Golden Spruce over the holidays but just getting into it this weekend and so far a great read. Enjoying how much it goes into setting the stage for the environment, early time period, people and cultures. I haven't explored the west coast at all and now I really want to.

Haida Gwaii sounds majestic and its people fierce, to match their environment. I don't think I would have picked up a book marketed as focused on a history of logging, but the tidbits in there about how the industry evolved, how people were drawn in and played their role, is fascinating

Still haven't gotten to the main storyline yet but I love this quote: "While the armies of empires dominate the open plain, rebels and patriots gain advantage in the shelter of trees -- right beside outcasts, outlaws and mystics"

Shameful racism and bias in the BBC's coverage Important work by Owen here and proud we were a tiny part of it @techforpalestine.org

Owen Jones@owenjones.bsky.social

In BBC coverage, mentions of Israeli and Palestinians deaths competed for space since 7th October. That's despite far more Palestinian deaths. There's one exception - a huge spike in the mentions of Palestinian deaths in early April. The reason for this should disturb you.

Full read: bsky.app/profile/owen... It's heartening to know there's a continued effort happening inside the BBC to right these wrongs but it's also enraging to see how management is responding each time

The BBC is in civil war over Israel and Palestine. BBC journalists are in revolt over what they call "systematic Israeli propaganda" churned out by the Corporation. My exclusive investigative piece for @dropsitenews.com πŸ‘‡ www.dropsitenews.com/p/bbc-civil-...

Just changed my investment portfolio to halal. Wish there was a way to filter out all companies with exposure to occupied Palestine but seems like this is the next best thing.

Been struggling to narrow down this #expo crash we're having on Android. At least I think it originates here: github.com/expo/expo/bl... But can't figure out why the JS would eval without native bindings 🫠 Same problem with SDK 51 and #reactnative 74/75

Couldn't reproduce in the end but was able to bring back those libraries by patching in the latest from RNHeadlessAppLoader.kt in expo-core-modules for the sdk-51 branch because not all of it seems to have been backported from main. Suspect it was the "run on UI thread" enforcement.

one of the best debugging techniques of all time is to log everything relevant and deterministic, and diff the two logs

Interesting parallels in Brazil after the protests of June 2013, with what's happening here in Canada ahead of our upcoming election. Dilma getting skewered in the polls for issues that were outside of her jurisdiction (federal vs state/provincial).

They say being embarrassed about code you've written in the past is a sign of growth but what if it was merged a few minutes ago

You can really witness the "invisible hand of the algorithm" when using an app like this. It's refreshing to get away from that world.

Going to be interesting to see how Bluesky tackles the evergreen moderation problem. As with all human problems, it'll never be perfect.

Now I'm just adding optional changing everywhere I shouldn't so I can get more useful errors πŸ˜… `globalThis.expo.?NativeModule` etc Everything seems to be crashing on entry point import paths, not function calls

It's training budget season! Any mobile developers have book or course recommendations for a guy who wants to get more familiar with: - language interop and build tool chains (thinking cpp specifically so I can better grok RN core things). NDK? - android perf & debugging #ReactNative #Android

The tiny tap area on avatars for people you don't follow in this app really bothers me. Such a struggle to find the spot β˜πŸ»πŸ•΅πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ Contribution opportunity? πŸ€”

Been building a build flags library for #expo and I'm starting to think I'm overdoing it πŸ˜… * CLI for generating a runtime flags module during dev * Config plugin for release and module autolinking control * Babel plugin for constants folding * Metro plugin for special cache eviction ... And on

What happened to Google Play review times?? We just launched our app on Android and it took us a month to get through initial public track review. So frustrating. Android used to be quick and easy 🫠

We ended up resubmitting once to keep our app inline with our iOS one feature-wise, but both submissions were stuck in review for 2 weeks at least. We tried reaching the review folks through various Google contacts in other departments but they seem unable to get through to anyone. "Open a ticket"

What ended up working is kind of hilarious... Exasperated at day 17 of the review queue, I desperation-post on a public support forum for Google Play and we were escalated to a review in 24 hours. On the store in 48 (after some pointless rejections). Mobile dev... Sometimes... Why do I bother πŸ₯²

You are up to date.
