I wrote about those antediluvians in The End of Oak Street for @lareviewofbooks.bsky.social. Thanks to @sayanniething.bsky.social for letting me get a little weird with the Michigan of it all! Some general spoilers, but only one specific one re: fate of the dog. #FossilFriday tinyurl.com/dinostories

Michigan's own Tim Allen might not be all that pleased to be cheek by jowl with Karl Marx in this epigraph... so let it be known that I'm grateful for his very good work in Galaxy Quest—a nearly perfect movie ft. another Midwestern notable, Mr. Tony Shalhoub, of Green Bay, Wisconsin (Go Bears)

My uni just posted this essay on LinkedIn (recognition is neat) but cropped out the image of the effing dinosaurs (probably advisable), so there’s a nsfw 🦕🦕 surprise for anyone who clicks

It could be a traditional panel or (ideally!) a seminar, a new format for ASLE in which participants convene at several sessions over several days. Like a conference within a conference. Get in touch if you'd like to be part of the proposal! 🦤

A great, thoughtful essay about an interesting-sounding book and a decidedly so-so movie, with a pitch-perfect punchline.

Alison is too kind and it's so exciting to see one's work being used so deftly (after a decade of it all just being in my head)!

The essay includes heaps of brilliance from @tattersdill.bsky.social's THE SOCIAL DINOSAUR (it's so quotable!) and multiple links to @restingdinoface.bsky.social's work (her new book TYRANT LIZARD QUEEN is out next month!). Plus the wildest epigraph pairing I'll ever manage. tinyurl.com/dinostories

I've got Marx & Sagan in this essay & here's one more Carl—Kasell, the voice of Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me! For some time, I thought Kasell WAS Sagan (surely host @petersagal.bsky.social's surname led me there). This was quite troubling to me, as a child in the late 90s... tinyurl.com/dinostories

...because I knew Carl Sagan to be quite dead. So how the heck was he recording messages on quiz winners' answering machines? A prominent atheist calling in from the great beyond! Why was nobody talking about this?!? An absurd case of crossed cosmic wires.

The flattened prehistoric past of Oak Street becomes meaningful (more meaningful, that is, than a typical antediluvian world) if we notice what is going on with depictions of the human past. The movie takes a marked interest in happy family photos, images that omit & conceal less happy realities...

Speaking of. I wrote this for my much missed cattle dog, Independence Day Laurence, who would've fought an Allosaurus for me. Also because I had to figure out why I (contra many!) appreciated Oak Street's anachronistic mess of monsters. @tattersdill.bsky.social's new book helped me find my answers.

Attention Philly Families! It is critical that we show Drexel and city government that our enthusiasm for the Academy of Natural Sciences is going strong! Bring your kids, friends, & neighbors down to the parkway on Saturday from 2-6pm. It's a kid-friendly rally to support the academy!

Not a memorial—a monument! "Laura Dominguez, a member of the city’s Cultural Heritage Commission & a historian at USC, said that... Los Angeles hasn’t typically built large monuments to historic figures; its leaders have long thought of it as a city of the future." www.nytimes.com/2026/09/10/u...

Sometimes I doubt my book project: Do dinosaurs really function as spokes-creatures for consumption? Have I somehow Sokal hoaxed myself? Grateful for this reporting on a monstrous trend and vexed that this rex is being so defamed—I suppose that those who are extinct cannot legally be libeled.

SCOOP: 404 Media placed a tracking device in a shipment of rare books to see which AI company was buying it. What did we find? It ended up at an Amazon facility where Amazon scans and destroys books. Yes. This is literally the logo outside the Amazon warehouse door. Read now:

Two chapters in and I've dog-eared almost every page... Will's book is *very* good, no surprise there, and his ideas were rattling around in my brain through the entirety of The End of Oak Street (also, imo, very good). #FossilFriday 🦕 Ask your library to acquire a copy of The Social Dinosaur!

So here we go then: the result of many years thinking about how dinosaurs make science and the imagination work together. It's written for both literary critics and scientists and my dearest hope is that it will help foster an academy where we talk to each other more

Folks, Deadline Hollywood (???) has covered JCO’s tweet about Emily Wilson’s review of the blockbuster film version of the timeless epic composed long before recorded history began. We are so back.

And I'm thinking about all the Classics PhD students who might be teaching fuller-than-usual Intro to Ancient Greek courses. (My grad student was fab, but he did make me cry tears of frustration, once, after introducing our class to irregular verbs.)

Grateful for all the good writing that this film is... engendering. Since so many of its best bits are borrowed from The Aeneid, I am desperate for some patron to get an adaptation underway: stories in a story, naturally, about Virgil writing his epic encomium. Pattinson plays Aeneas AND Augustus.

This post is unavailable.

Alternately: a prestige TV miniseries about some underemployed postdocs who, owing to the state of academia, abandon their scholarship and make the dangerous journey beyond Avernus—so to find Tom Stoppard in the underworld and bring back his screenplay about Virgil writing The Aeneid.

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.

Sam Neill was, of course, Dinosaur Man (and by all accounts the loveliest human). But The Tudors found me at a formative age so for me it's his Cardinal Wolsey — a scheming but sympathetic statesman who died by... creative liberty. The Tudors soundtrack is second only to LotR as my writing playlist.

I think the spirit of Wolsey, that alter rex, may have had something to do with the England v. Argentina result just now. He would've preferred a pitched battle (a battle on the pitch?!) against France over Spain.

Wait everyone shut up for a second: the discovery of the Brachiosaurus holotype is at the exact midpoint between the founding of the United States and today (July 4, 1901)

Happy discovery day to these two upstanding (lol) Americans

This techno-fascist Odyssey outrage is entirely predictable—and so very boring! The Homeric cycle is (ought to be) an open-access usable past... And these legendary stories are far more rewarding when we recognize that they are living myths, not scenes carved in stone.

Alison Laurence@dinostalgia.bsky.social

Colossal named its first "de-extinct" dire wolves for the fratricidal founder of a now fallen empire and the twin he did in. These names... they've been gnawing at me! So, I wrote about lupine Romulus and Remus and snow-white mythmaking for @g-ehr.bsky.social. g-ehr.com/essay/cry-wo... #Paleosky

The Mediterranean's waves roll onto the shores of three different continents, after all! 🌊 (Spent a bit too much time just now confirming that the Aegean, Ionian, etc, are marginal seas within the greater body of water. "Elongated embayment" is the term, apparently.)
