This means that the increased price of RAM and consumer electronics was a result of an artificial "supply chain crisis" created by Jensen Huang pushing NVIDIA's customers to take early delivery of GPUs. Jensen Huang is responsible for making life worse for everyone.

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

NVIDIA seems to be channel stuffing, forcing Amazon and other customers to take early delivery. The argument that these things are "scarce" when you don't even have anywhere to plug them into is nonsense...unless NVIDIA is saying you NEED to take them now, or else. GPUs are stacked in warehouses.

the funniest part is he asked for n64 bomberman, we booted up 64, and then he was like "oh not that one the one with the good song" so he was 100% thinking about redial (but bought 64 and 2nd attack alongside hero anyway)

Turns out the friction of having to learn photoshop was a crucial firewall protecting society from the terrible taste of small business owners

When I first heard about AI being used for menus and advertisements, my concern was largely that it would be used to idealize the food and make it look better than it actually was. At no point did I imagine that restaurants would willingly put out horrific looking images of their food on purpose

and it's going to get significantly worse next year btw. and the year after that, and so on. these are the death throes of console gaming, and new console launches won't save them if they cost $1000+. i don't think they're going to make it, man

The US console hardware market has not been in a more precarious position “since the early 80s”, according to market research firm Circana. YTD Xbox console sales are at an all-time low, while PlayStation is at its lowest point since 2013. vgc.news/news/us-cons...

actually, nintendo will probably survive as long as they manage to occupy the same price category that playstation and xbox used to occupy. but the switch 2's price hikes aren't over, either...

I had no idea this was a thing, that's wild. I don't trust Richard Garriott with any new game projects of any kind at this point, but EA hasn't even done the bare minimum with the Ultima series, so... okay, I guess? A simple remaster collection would be nice, at least.

VGC@videogameschronicle.com

Game designer Richard Garriott has confirmed he will soon regain the rights to the influential RPG series Ultima from Electronic Arts. "It means I could re-release the earlier Ultimas, but it also means I could sequel them." vgc.news/news/richard...

But more importantly, I hope this leads to everyone else who has ever sold any of their IPs to EA doing the same thing. There are so many dead IPs languishing under their nonexistent stewardship that are begging to be rescued.

Remember when Crunchyroll tried to make their subtitles significantly worse a year ago? They backtracked on it at the time, but I suspected they were just delaying their plans to shift from Aegisub to OOONA, and sadly, it seems I was right: Crunchyroll is actively pushing OOONA subs to users now.

Daiz@daiz.moe

New article on ★ daiz.moe ★ Crunchyroll is destroying its subtitles for no good reason daiz.moe/crunchyroll-... A ton of research and effort went into this one. This is the article to read to get to the bottom of Crunchyroll's subtitle changes! Replies here will show up as comments (eventually)

I'm not saying that you need to accept this, but everyone needs to understand that there are practically no major non-indie studios that aren't adopting some form AI coding tools in their toolchain. And IGF disclosures apparently exposed some indie darlings as using it too (to judges only)

VGC@videogameschronicle.com

Capcom wants to evolve its RE Engine into an “AI-generation game engine” with a roster of technology improvements, according to one of its programmers. vgc.news/news/capcom-...

I don't have any answers for what to do about this. I avoid as many slop-coded apps and games as I can, and the ethical concerns surrounding any AI usage have not gone away. But there is some nuance to the topic that we will be forced to reckon with should we want to continue playing new AA+ games.

I at least appreciate that Capcom is still (publicly, at least) taking an anti-AI art stance. But I don't know how long that stance will hold once other forms of AI become normalized.

HDR is so damn cool on a display that properly supports it. But experiencing a good implementation once will only leave you angry at how many games completely botch it their implementation.

HEARTBREAKING: Great Video Game Has Terrible HDR Implementation

I can deal with a mediocre HDR implementation, but the fact that so many modern games don't support it AT ALL is maddening. And the fact that some of the better implementations over the last couple years were the Trails remakes and Fantasy Life i of all games is even more baffling.

Though in Fantasy Life i's case, I think the bigger takeaway is less that their HDR was really good and more that their default SDR tonemap was awful. Drab, with blown-out highlights. Using HDR mode was the only way to salvage things. I've never seen anything like it.
