How should we measure democracy in an increasingly contested political environment? I'm putting together a panel on democracy measurement for the #DVPW Annual Conference 2027 in Leipzig. It's an "open panel" and open for submissions: www.dvpw.de/dvpw2027/en/... (search for "Panel 993")!

Fantastic news -- no mean feat especially when we consider how difficult it is for voters to sanction semi- or anti-democratic incumbents like Vucic! The figure below is my summary of the different ways that the lit documents in which the chain from anti-democratic signal to sanctioning can break.

Guy De Launey@guydelauney.bsky.social

Of all the possible scenarios in Serbia's elections, I don't think Vucic conceding before the results were announced was on the cards. Nevertheless, here we are. Vucic has conceded; the Student List are set for victory. "I wish them success", Vucic says. Cheers on the streets.

Linus Westheuser@lwestheuser.bsky.social

Does crime mobilize or demobilize? Scholarship disagrees, partly because studies measure crime and participation differently. In our new @apsrjournal.bsky.social paper, we test 3 measures of crime exposure against both electoral and non-electoral participation using validated turnout data.
