Forgotten Heroes: ground crews. They were mostly kids, usually younger than their pilots. While the flier(s) grabbed what sleep they could, the crews patched holes, fixed that damn leaky oil line (again), armed up the plane and did everything possible to bring β€œtheir” plane home. #WW2 #aviation

Rest in Peace Walter Koenig. Thank you for navigating us through the final frontier, for your years of activism, writing, and memorable characters like the joyous Chekov and the sinister Bester. We're forever grateful that you lent your talents to our game. We'll see you again, in the stars.

Oh no 😭 One of the last members of the USS Enterprise has left. RIP Walter Marvin Koenig (1936-2026) Star Trek, Babylon 5, Moontrap, The Starlost, The Questor Tapes, Futurama... What a career in sci-fi. I will miss Pavel Chekov. Again 😞

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Customer: I bought a battery from you for my moped and it won’t work. And what’s the bottle of water in the box for? Us: that’s the bottle of sulfuric acid you have to put in the battery before it will work. God save us.

Ok. This is going to be a long thread about #WW2 in the Pacific: the Battle off Samar, which is a subset of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest sea battle in #History due to the area, & amount of combatants. First, let’s look at the background and what caused this collision.

Forgotten heroes: minesweepers. You have a wooden hulled ship loaded with sweeping gear, along with as much wood, cork and anything else light and buoyant so your ship is as far out of water as possible while deliberately going through minefields. #navalhistory #ww2

The green band indicates a military operated ship. Civilian relief agencies sported a red band. All of them had to fly the flag of the Red Cross or its equivalent. Woe to the submarine captain who torpedoed one of these, for whatever reason. Unfortunately, it did happen.

Hospital ships had to be clearly marked, fully lit, and unarmed. They could be inspected and searched, and patients possibly taken as POWs, but this rarely happened. Staff were immune from capture or impressment. They also had to treat ANYONE, ally or enemy.

Forgotten heroes: hospital ships. In use since the days of the Roman Empire, hospital ships really started to advance during the Napoleonic Wars. The Hague Convention X of 1907 laid down rules on treatment of these ships in wartime. *Most* of the time all sides tried to comply. #WW2 #navalhistory

Forgotten heroes: Flower class corvettes. They tossed about horribly, were cold, damp & miserable. Barely just over 200 feet long, these stubborn little fellows & their crews escorted convoys across the violent North Atlantic during #WW2 fending off U-boats from their charges. #navalhistory

Forgotten heroes: the Hawker Hurricane. Overshadowed by the more famous Spitfire in the media, the Hurricane actually had *more* kills during the Battle of Britain, had a successful secondary role as a fighter/bomber & served in almost every major theatre during #WW2 #aviation
