What happens in the brain when we manipulate our thoughts?
We asked 30 epilepsy patients to mentally invert short melodies.
Intracerebral #iEEG recordings suggest brain synchrony and sensory inhibition are key for mental manipulation:
doi.org/10.1101/2025...#neuroskyence#musicscience
What do individual human neurons do when a sound violates expectations?
In our new EJN paper, we characterize single- and multi-unit responses to several auditory deviants using microwire recordings from 13 patients.

Ever slam on the brakes after seeing a speed trap? Or better yet, slow down ahead in anticipation?
In our new paper w/ @anask07.bsky.social in @cp-iscience.bsky.social, we use #iEEG to study the neural basis of reactive and proactive control in medial and lateral PFC.

Loved how I got to clarify that the 5 principles in section 4 of the paper were nothing new. They came straight out of The Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity, that every scientists in The Netherlands already ought to know. All we did is apply them to AI. www.nwo.nl/en/netherlan...
π€How does the human brain predict unexpected sounds?
Our new study shows that the prefrontal cortex doesnβt work as a single unit. Instead, the orbitofrontal and lateral prefrontal cortex make distinct, time-sensitive contributions. #iEEG#BrainLesion#OFC#LPFCdoi.org/10.1101/2025...
Don't miss the chance to apply to work with Andres.
He is a great researcher in the field of predictive processing, working with #iEEG across humans and non-human primates

Excited to announce a new study from my time at the Center for Music in the Brain, Aarhus University, now available on bioRxiv!
Inharmonicity enhances brain signals of attentional capture and auditory stream segregation

as an experiment in academic internet stuff I made a 'new-auditory' list for folks interested in audition, hearing, speech, music etc
anybody can join at groups.google.com/g/new-audito...
the 30-year-old AUDITORY list is v cool but has many drawbacks, not least that it runs on 30-yr-old tech

When I was 5, I loved science, which I took to be planets and magnets and chemicals and shit.
Soon I realized science was a collective human activity, and these were just the objects of its attention.
Anyway, whenever I read an OpEd on how science isn't political, I think "Are you 5 years old?"
