SCIENCE ROCKS!! Needles! Dogs! Oh, my!

"Routines and scaffolds are not sufficient to ensure effortful thinking by students, and they may even be deceptive if teachers start to think that orderly classrooms are the primary end-goal." Most of my PSTs have only experienced routines as the end-in-and-of-itself. Seeing thinking is a process.

Earlier today, I weighed in on the Great Instructional Debates of 2026 by sharing my mental model of effective instruction. You can make of it what you will, but make sure to check the reflective and insightful comment left by @biblioracle.bsky.social about his own teaching.

And: "...why I’m hostile to using AI for lesson planning? Teachers must think about the “why?” of their lessons — this question sits at the core of their professional judgment and expertise. Relying on a mindless tool to generate text..." Yeah, novice teachers need to not use AI for planning, ever.

Early this year, I visited Ingram, a TX town of ~1,900, to check out a tip. The area was starting to recover from its worst flood in a century. But as Latino workers drove to jobsites to help rebuild, the tipster said, a cop in a black Dodge Charger kept stopping them ... 🧵

This is how desperate the Texas GOP is. Faking a permission skip text. Honestly, I opened it from the preview because I wondered if I had forgotten to sign something.

Final layout! Will bind in the white holly fabric. Not sure what the back will be yet. #quilting

You know what? If everyone picking up the new Sarah J Maas on Tuesday also picked up just 1 more book by an author they'd never heard of before it would actually have a pretty meaningful positive impact on the book industry. #BookSky

Loop stitch ftw! I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with this colorway for a month. Wanted to do something not lace, but the color covered up any such design. I’m doing loop on just one side. The back has a great knotty pattern. #knitting

I've thought about this reporting a lot and, first of all, really appreciate making tangible what has been felt by so many over recent years—students, teachers, families. We need more reporting like this. It matters. An additional thought, though... [1/3]

I finished high school in three years and college in three. I was in a rush. I get it. But I don't want to see an explosion of college lite for I fear vocational courses will win over humanities and social sciences; I wish I'd studied more of both. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

How it's going in Texas. A first read: 'Texas gets what they deserve.' A second read: Look at the amazing journalists covering this story. Or *Baylor's* student paper publishing a commentary by South Asian student. Or 19 mil registered voters. And, 2.4 million early voters in TX on Day 3.

I stress the historical angle - that this is a reduction on a per capita basis even compared to the mid-1900s - because I want to be clear this isn't a 'bubble' popping, but a decision to have *fewer* historians in the future than any time in living memory. I think that is an unwise decision.

The GOP is literally starving children. Community Eligibility is when enough children in a school qualify for free lunch (and breakfast!) that the whole school can get it. The means more kids eat. And when they eat, they do better in school. It's really simple. It doesn't have to be like this.

Katie Bergh@katiebergh.bsky.social

About 2 million kids have lost SNAP since deep cuts were enacted last year. The ripple effects: Kids losing SNAP also lose automatic enrollment for free meals at school. And as more kids lose SNAP, their schools may be forced to drop Community Eligibility.

You know what happens when a state passes a freedom to read law that has ACTUAL teeth to it? With actual ways to enforce it? Things don't get banned. Maryland is THE gold standard here, and two stories *from yesterday* showcase it.

Not a single parent has filed a book challenge in Palm Beach in two years. The district just removed 1800 books anyway, because AI told them to. There are many reasons that is unthinkable but let's not forget AI DOES NOT HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE BOOKS. IT CANNOT READ THEM. It just makes crap up!

Florida Freedom to Read Project@flfreedomread.bsky.social

Palm Beach pulled 1800+ titles from its school library collections because AI flagged them for review. Media specialists and principals must sign attestation forms verifying their libraries are compliant with vague law. None of this is normal. freedomtoreadproject.substack.com/p/when-ai-de...

Decades ago, Michael Apple started writing about the Right’s desire to destroy public schools to make there capital ‘tied up in schools’ available to the markets. Neoliberalism piled on. Now, Audrey Watters picks apart the ed tech desire to take over. Families just want their schools back.

And even if Alpha fails, we already know there is an entire venture capital and philanthropic community ready to invest in the next efforts to replace humans with technology. Treating the scores on the tests as the issue here in some ways reaffirms the ecosystem these actors profit from.
