Right after promoting headers but before setting data types, replace "NaN" as text. If it has already been converted, change the column to text, replace the values, then convert it back. 🧭Takeaway: Clean up problem values before you set data types, not after.

The Wikipedia community has built a tool that makes it possible to embed our interactive Our World in Data charts right in any Wikipedia page. I have always admired Wikipedia and all the people contributing to it. And I'm very happy that our work now can get used this way!

Hello, network, I'm looking for an adjunct to teach our interactive visualization class next semester (virtually). If you are based in the United States—unfortunately we can't hire people from other countries—design visualizations with JS+D3, etc. and are interested in teaching, send me a message.

Can't we have both? At the Strong [National Museum of Play], you can engage with the toys AND read signage on the developmental psychology behind the toys. It's easy to ignore the signs, but they're available for those looking for the education.

Asher HELLbein@asherelbein.bsky.social

There is a race to the bottom here of assuming that because most people don't read signs, it's somehow elitist or off-putting or anti-democratic to have them. But not having them is, I think, a dereliction of what a museum is. These are not and should not be contextless artifacts

So I see the state of applied psych as: - many people who are ready to run comprehensive studies and earn buy in via quantitative psych - very few companies (not just orgs, not just baseball) who are willing to allow multi year roadmap to show validity - fewer people who can outline a roadmap

The verb form of "jargon" should be "jargle." It even has historical precedent! PR Daily let me go off about the etymology of corporate jargon: stakeholders, wheelhouses, 800-pound gorillas, cornering the market and so much more. www.prdaily.com/the-origins-...

The only time he mentions a non-Ivy-caliber business school is a friend who went to University of Vermont, which he cites as a rare success story. I can't imagine what would happen to his brain if he realized what business schools at regional state schools do for their local communities.

Turns out AI can cause more problems than it solves. 36% of AI execs at companies with $1B+ in annual rev reported an AI incident that led to data loss, financial damage, brand damage or operational disruptions. In 1995, Massachusetts got back 87% of its bottles for recycling. Last year it was 33%. The deposit rate hasn't changed, and that’s the problem. Next door, Connecticut doubled its deposit and the numbers went the other way. Full article: www.mondayeconomist.com/p/bottle-dep...

mondayeconomist.comInflation Quietly Broke the Bottle DepositThe bottle deposit has been a nickel since Reagan. Inflation quietly broke it, and one state’s fix shows how incentives really work.

The backslashes in "10\27\97" are wrong. The forward slashes in every other date make it infuriating.

lede = introductory section in journalism bury the lede = hiding the most relevant pieces of a story within other distracting information Allegedly, it’s spelled ‘lede’ to avoid confusion with ‘lead,’ which was the strip of metal that would separate lines of type.

Interesting #dataviz. Normally, we see something like a single mean with CIs, but these charts report the range as the metric. I.e., the full range is prominent. I appreciate this important choice to reinforce that the numbers aren't perfect.
