My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

When you read the link description and go "Oh hey it's Ondrej from ppa:ondrej/php" :-D

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

that part. this is why we need to teach critical thinking not “how to use ai”

the example of uber is instructive. it was pretty incredible when the money cannon was firing. now that it's expensive we're stuck with an immiseration engine for workers who depend on it, that sabotages public transport and pours waterfalls of money into anti labor legislation

Seeing "thank you for your attention in this matter" always reminds me of the Hitchhiker's Guide, and Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz addressing us all with "People of Earth, your attention please..." two minutes before demolishing the planet.

Oh fun. Just heard an account of someone getting a phone call from a politician, that was not a call from a politician. I'm not hugely surprised that it's now a vector for donation money scamming and disinformation peddling in New Zealand, but dismayed just the same.

Tenured faculty members at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are decorating the university’s surveillance cameras with googly eyes, rhinestones, and glitzy decorations to protest its investment in what they call “Big Brother technology.”

hyperallergic.comThe MIT Professors Bedazzling Security Cameras to Highlight Campus SurveillanceThe intervention is responding to the university’s recent $3 million investment in more than 500 new AI-integrated campus surveillance cameras.

An old friend of mine who went through the same high-decile assaults at school that I did recently had his ribs cracked while living in social housing, so... yeah. Let's not kid ourselves that this is only a problem of poverty, and only counts once people have reached the very bottom of the cliff.

If you wanna know the real horseshoe theory in Aotearoa New Zealand, it’s that Oranga Tamariki is on call to the high decile and private schools to the same extent as the lowest decile gang parent schools because the child abuse issues are extensive at both socioeconomic ends.

If you’re on the eastside of Ōtautahi and know a young person who hasn’t enrolled to vote there are other young folks ready and waiting to enroll them at Eastgate Mall.

Dunedin (as of the 30 of September figures that are currently on the elections webpage) got the distinction of 53.6% 18-24 enrolment and 105.01% for 25-29 year olds. Which is really just an indication of transient populations meeting estimated residential population denominators.

Also worth noting: if you're Australian, Niuean, Tokelauan or a Cook Islander, you can enrol after you have lived in New Zealand continuously for 12 months or more. This makes you "resident for electoral purposes".

If you know young people who are not enrolled to vote yet but will be eligible on November 7th, please encourage them to enrol and quickly. They don't have to know who they're going to vote for right away, but this at least gives them a choice. * vote.nz/enrolling/en... * vote.nz/enrolling/en...

There are just six days left to enrol, but we are about 130k behind where final enrolment got to last time - when people could still enrol all the way through election day. It is becoming very hard to see this gap really closing in such a short time.

Americans and other white people with strong passports are absolutely going to drive me to a bottle of whiskey with the perpetual, "my company shouldn't complain when I work with no proper visa or authorisation from a foreign county, without asking" comments, and I'm a huge remote work advocate.

I'm thrilled to share my first foray into nature writing. I describe my travels through Aotearoa New Zealand to see the country's rarest birds—and use this as a vehicle to tell the stories of the islands' evolutionary history and the bold conservation efforts that saved these creatures. Gift link
