Apologies in advance for what might look like a rambling diatribe going nowhere. But the one thing I know really well - better than almost anyone else - is boxing. And there’s a really valuable lesson from boxing that the Democratic Party needs to learn in a hurry. Let’s start with the boxing bit.

Exhausted by stupidity: Melania negotiated a 'ceasefire' while Trump bleated like a sheep. A THREAD.

1. I am very tired of being asked to be stupid. I know that is not the most important thing right now. There are many more serious consequences to electing a criminal president who is burning up the economy.

Happy Columbus Day! The day we celebrate a genocidal invader of American lands, who spread hate, disease and death everywhere he went, and yet, was inexplicably celebrated for far too long despite his flagrant record of sociopathic behavior. I’m sorry, I’m thinking of Elon Musk.

The taboo against naming Trump's dementia is fading. A THREAD.

1. I think the president of the United States really believes "there's never been anybody" who deserves the Nobel Peace Prize more than he does. He really believes he "settled eight wars." He really believes he stopped "the total obliteration of the world" by going to war with Iran.

Two years. I miss you, little brother.

Daniel Roberts@drobertsimg.bsky.social

One year ago, my little brother died. The cause of death was cancer, but the real cause of death were the toxic burn pits he served by in Iraq and Afghanistan. The US government was very good to us. But all that has changed. Today, the government isn’t helping sick troops, it’s killing them. 1/x

Whenever I see a current or former university president in the news for sexual misconduct, I think of this chart from 2015. (ABC seems to have pulled down the original Five Thirty Eight article, but here’s a Feministing blog about it.)

For those not following NJ politics, please know that the Lt Gov resigned a few days ago because a report came out saying he did serial harassment, and yesterday he went on TV to say "i put that report through multiple AIs and they told me it wasn't sexual harassment." Former university president

Feel like this is broadly correct. AI is hideously immoral and should be illegal. The Third Circuit’s recent decision could well put the big firms out of business, which would be a huge win for humanity. BUT those of you who have convinced yourselves that it’s useless are deluding yourselves.

Will Oremus@willoremus.com

feels like there is a group of smart and well-intentioned people who long ago made up their minds that AI Is Bad, swore off using it, and now get all their info about AI from each other. not saying they're wrong that ai is bad! but i think they're gradually losing touch with what it is and does

I use AI very sparingly in my work and it has very useful applications in limited domains. It is not what it is advertised as, but it’s basically a vastly improved search engine. Just like a search engine, you can’t just accept what’s on the first output, but it can kickstart your research.

TL; DR - something can be immoral, a net negative for society, and still useful in certain applications. It’s sort of how I feel about Katy Perry. Roar still kicks, fight me.

From J6 insurrection to Schmitt's humiliation, there is a straight line. The latter covered up the former to confuse understanding of Trump's treason. A THREAD.

The Editorial Board@editorialboard.bsky.social

1. Let's not say goodbye to Eric Schmitt just yet. His story is about more than a power-mad senator falling on his face. It's part of a larger story about the Republicans defending the leader of an insurrection against the United States.

For an inside look into the mind of the Trump Administration: 1. Go to america.gov 2. type “hello” 3. type “play Minecraft” 4. watch the agent’s reality implode 5. ??? 6. PROFIT!

No one ever went broke underestimating the laziness of humanity. If AI kills us, it’s going to be like the dinosaur episode of Rick and Morty. It’s going to be because we were too lazy to stop it until it was too late.

The wheels are coming off yet Senate GOP can't quit Trump. A week of panic as well as paralysis. A THREAD.

The Editorial Board@editorialboard.bsky.social

1. The Washington Sun called it "panic week." Republicans seemed to wake up to the fact that things are not going to get better. This was the week in which they realized, all at once, that the light at the end of the tunnel may be from an oncoming train. mailchi.mp/washingtonsu...

not that i'm objecting but i do have to recognize that if there's anything the legal profession does well, it's regulate to protect the need for trained lawyers

Daniel Roberts@drobertsimg.bsky.social

California just passed a law forbidding lawyers from delegating to AI and requiring them to disclose any use of AI in their briefs. NY has a bill to prohibit AI from dispensing any sort of legal advice. A number of federal judges outright ban it on briefs in their courts. You will see more of this.

The time to act on AI is yesterday. I'm calling for an immediate pause on the development of advanced AI while lawmakers and regulators put systems in place to keep people safe.

You can rightfully ask whether this is spurred by the absolute shitshow briefs that have been AI generated or fears about lawyers losing work to chatbots, but the legal community is taking increasingly strong steps to limit its use. Other industries need to follow suit.

It is so fucked up that John Ritter’s character on Three’s Company was named Jack Tripper (i.e. Jack T. Ripper). Suzanne Somers never even knew she was in that sort of danger.

I've been doing more testing and thinking. I'm now convinced genAI detection is possible and Pangram does it pretty well. But there are a few caveats. First, Pangram likely depends on the limits of current LLMs because it seems to be using n-gram math. 1/

Corey Rayburn Yung@coreyryung.bsky.social

I uploaded a few texts to test Pangram, Unlke other AI detectors, it kind of works. It recognized some of my uploaded texts as 100% human (which they were). It identified genAI texts (although not that they were 100% LLM generated - see below).

Look, this is definitely not the right lesson to take from this, but if you’re a billionaire, you should be spending more than $160 on sex. I mean, do it for the economy if nothing else.

A day after his arrest on a charge of engaging in prostitution, San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York asked the court to seal the records. A judge denied the request. You can now read all those records over on @defector.com. The pay wall is down as the entire report is based on public records:

I’ve been thinking about my brother and crying a lot this morning and thought I’d share a story. I once asked him why, as a pacifist, he joined the military of all things. And he explained that if he didn’t do that, it might have fallen to someone who didn’t care about the lives of innocent people.

At one point, he had a significant leadership role in Afghanistan. And during that time there wasn’t a single civilian casualty. He really cared about everyone and just wanted all people to feel safe. He’d be so crushed by what we’re doing in Iran.
