If you would try to win by abandoning trans people (or any targeted group) you can save this “we need to win” talk; there is no “we.” I am about solidarity, and you have chosen anti-solidarity. You are not any “we” I recognize. You are the enemy I’m trying to defeat. Beating you is how my “we” wins.
On the *same day* the Cornell Seven drugged and raped Jane Doe, Cornell banned four students (including the President of Cornell JVP) from campus for three years for nonviolent, pro-Palestine protests. The same Cornell officials let the rapists off with apology essays.
3 things about Dem politicians who dabble in transphobia:
1. It's wrong, they're wrong, on a moral basis they're being evil
2. It's stupid, they're stupid, they'll never get any credit from the fascists for it
3. It's proof you're not capable of reading or rising to this, and therefore any, moment
If someone says to you "but isn't DSA all professionals and gentrifiers" feel free to just send them this piece by me dissentmagazine.org/article/muti...
lots of people hide behind ventriloquizing some imagined mass consensus around their political preferences or contrived, convenient tactical assumptions. we'd all be better off in the long run just saying what we actually want and why
Walz is proof that the pundits who demand that Dems “appeal to rural voters” don’t mean “explain progressive policy in a way that connects with rural voters”
they mean “be conservative in a way that I, the pundit, personally agree with”
fuck ‘em
We have written a statement in support of Ghent Uni's decision to suspend Nathan Cofnas. We resist attempts to frame this as a punishment for "whistleblowing" or censorship of "controversial research". We invite all academics who share our views to sign our letter.

Economics ("material conditions" if you want) never has a direct relationship with politics, the relationship is always constructed and mediated. This is one problem in the "vibecession" debate: the claim that politics in the US today has become decoupled from economic fundamentals..
assumes that in the past the two were straightforwardly coupled, which is not true. If there is a disconnect that seems new, it's because the mechanisms that meditate between economics and politics have changed.
centrists went seamlessly from "breaking up the big banks is racist actually" in 2016 to "maybe Donald Trump is right about immigrants and trans people" from ~2021-25 to "criticizing Hakeem Jeffries is racist actually" now. woke's back baby
My big objection to "woke 1" critiques is that the sort of shallow, dishonest identity based attacks that are often associated with "woke" people are deployed far more frequently by centrist and right wing "anti-woke" voices. Here's centrist thinktanker Jordan Weissmann reveling in this garbage.
Michigan Governor caught on hot mic with Oracle CEO Clay Magouyrk, discussing citizen opposition to AI data centers, bragging how she ignores their concerns: “We’re used to people saying 'f*ck no,' & doing it anyway.”🇺🇸
OK... I wasn't going to do a thread about this, but after trying to draft something short and pithy, I'm going to. It's a thread from my perspective, as someone who was a student of Paul Boghossian, an analytic philosophy acolyte, who abandoned the views of this about 15 years ago. 🧵
Very awkward for the presidents of two major US universities, as well as a series of highly regarded scholars (Keane Anthony Appiah!) to publicly shit in their own their trousers like this: www.vanderbilt.edu/principles/s...
“We propose to settle all the difficulty of the Dred Scott Decision by putting it into the Constitution. If a man is not a citizen of the country in which he is born, in God’s name of what country is he a citizen? If he may not live there, where has he a right to live?“
"U.S. officials called London insurers and brokers, trying to figure out how the market operates, industry insiders said."
When applied to the current administration, I urge caution in using terms like "plans," "strategy," "policy," or "doctrine."

Behold: the first-ever list of news outlets that have banned generative AI in their reporting. As of today, this is literally information that you cannot find on Google.
My goal is to fill the starter pack, so please send over suggestions with supporting evidence!

*very* striking to me that trump's two big losses at SCOUTS--first the fed, now tariffs--are both about core macroeconomic institutions, namely free trade and an independent central bank. "go nuts on culture, go nuts on immigration, but DO NOT TOUCH the neoliberal consensus"
If there's one empirical insight I'd want everyone to understand about American politics, it's this:
America's problems are solved problems. Just not here.
What would change if the US simply matched the average of 31 peer democracies? Not Denmark or Norway. Just the middle of the pack. 🧵
"Europeans recognize his vision about free public transit and universal childcare. We expect our governments to make these kinds of services accessible to all of us,” said Verbeek. “We pay higher taxes and get civilized societies in return."
(from the inbox) Less than an hour later this morning, just before 10:30 at Roscoe and Harding, feds again released gas as they were driving away, unobstructed, from a relatively small number of neighbors.
29. That’s why Platner isn’t truly apologizing. That’s why he’s covering the tat up. He *must* put race in the background, especially the race of those he’s courting. If there’s one thing most candidates avoid, it’s reminding white voters they’re white.

My response to the NYT’s “moderate to win” argument: The data shows the strategy is tapped out. Being seen as moderate by voters doesn’t boost votes, replacing every progressive with moderates would net 0 seats, and the graveyard of defeated D incumbents if full of moderates, not progressives.
as an author of a book on reparations I am intimately familiar with the move people make from "the thing you want isn't politically viable right now" to "you shouldn't want it, talk about wanting it, or even think about it" but it never stops being weird to me
1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it).
But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that
"Common decency stigmatizes people that do not participate in it—removes them from voluntary association. We indeed have to live with one another, but terms and conditions apply."

An Update:
I received an email canceling my contract as a columnist at @startribune.com after sharing this story publicly.
(I had written columns past the one-year contract already + been asked to continue on in July).
Hours after Charlie Kirk was shot, I emailed my editors at a major American newspaper a potential column focused on the role of Christian Nationalism + radicalization of young white Christian men.
They killed it. This is what they published instead.
The last line: The Show Must Go On.
