Close up, wind turbines produce ~55 db - a bit louder than a fridge. Gas power plants come in at 85-100 db - like a jackhammer. Industrial diesel generators can hit 130 db - like standing next to a fighter jet taking off of an aircraft carrier. This isn't about noise - it's about who has to hear it.
The @nytimes.com can never seem to avoid mentioning somebody who lives under a wind turbine complaining about the "noise". The "what about ism" seems to be a reflex. They just cannot seem to bring themselves to mention the improved air quality for thousands, etc.

sorry for the logorrhea, but it's worth noting that the Bundespolizei in Germany was the Bundesgrenzschutz until 2005, when it was reorganised and redeployed as a more general federal police force precisely because most of its border control functions were no longer needed. Yet now..

This is a perfect example of the pervasiveness neoliberal nihilism, where all political activity boils down to spending and voting. Nothing else is even conceivable. www.theverge.com/podcast/9170...

Putting a bumper sticker on my car that says “I’d rather be monitoring my agentic coding agents right now.” A Waymo sees it, becomes conscious, and accelerates into me at top speed, killing me instantly.

The NYT actually has been winding down its local (Metro desk) coverage for a solid 20 years. Hate-sharing their content on Bluesky gives them a reason to change tack and dump more resources into heckling the NYC electoral left www.vitalcitynyc.org/articles/new...

Very interesting new polling data: The vast majority of French, Germans and Italians support strengthening European tech sovereignty and incentivising "Buy European" approaches. Another area where European voters are ahead of the policy debate. Source: legrandcontinent.eu/fr/2025/09/2...

Happy birthday John Coltrane. 99! This is the tune that turned me on to Coltrane and jazz in general. Incredible. m.youtube.com/watch?v=q7X2...

Brian Kilmeade stated homeless individuals who are resisting mental health treatment should be given "involuntary lethal injection, or something. Just kill ’em." This weekend, there was a mass shooting of a homeless encampment. It barely made a blip on the news. www.startribune.com/shooting-sou...

Syriza represented an effort to provide a parliamentary obstacle to austerity. The defeat of the movements 3 years before led many to adopt this as a last ditch effort. But its eventual coalition with a far-right party & the acceleration of austerity radically de-legitimised the "Left".
