The Kremlin wants the world to forget who started the war. On 24 February 2022, Putin ordered an unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine, unleashing the largest war in Europe since the Second World War. The war was not ‘forced upon’ Russia. Russia chose to invade.

What Russia cynically calls ‘liberation’ means Ukrainian cities reduced to rubble, civilians driven from their homes, and entire communities destroyed. This devastation is what the Kremlin proudly calls ‘victory’ and finds worth celebrating.

You cannot launch a war of aggression, occupy Ukrainian territory, launch indiscriminate nightly strikes on Ukraine’s cities, kill its civilians and forcibly deport its children, then claim ‘retaliation’ when the country you invaded fights back. Russia is the aggressor, not the victim.

Putin wanted the election to show that Russians support the war.   The only registered party openly opposing the war was removed from the nationwide ballot.   Nothing says ‘public support’ quite like removing the option to disagree.

Speaking of Russian things on fire, look at this St Petersburg landmark. The well known "Miller's mansion" on St Isaac's square has gone up in flames. The building wasn't in use, but probably an insurance job as it was sold for luxury apartments just as Putin tanked the economy.

Russia threatens NATO countries. NATO countries strengthen their defences.   Russia points to those defences and says: ‘See? NATO is threatening us’.   A remarkably efficient way to turn the consequences of your own behaviour into evidence for your narrative.

Russia plans to spend 17.1 trillion rubles or $202.58 billion on Putin's war in 2027. This is a 206% increase from Russia's 2021 pre-war military budget of $65 billion. Putin will bankrupt the Russian people before he will give up on his dream of restoring the Russian Empire.

The Kremlin apparently thinks a pause for talks would be too much of an interruption to its war. Russia’s ‘commitment to peace’ on full display:
