BREAKING: SCOTUS rejects Trump admin's request to allow it to end gender-affirming medical care in prisons — a significant, if tentative, rejection of one of the admin's most extreme anti-trans arguments. Only Thomas and Alito noted they would have granted the stay. More to come: www.lawdork.com

so, last week I spoke with a source who as far as I can tell genuinely thinks that A.I., as in artificial intelligence, is pronounced "Al," as in short for Alan, and I think she is an accidental genius and that's what I'm going to be calling it from now on

just saw a list of things considered “friction-maxxing” and it included, among other things, invite friends over, listen to an album start to finish, grow herbs, go to the library, and make a grocery list. are we way farther gone than I thought or have I swallowed the rage bait

you know what they say, as goes Neil so go I

we need a favstar account that just updates us every time a new celeb comes out as pro- or anti- Digger. neil young joined the pro camp this week and not enough people are aware of that for my liking

there is no doubt in my mind that hurts wanted to play every bit as much as sirianni wanted him to. sirianni is not the person i'd blame. HOWEVER, it is the responsibility of every single medical professional who they consulted with to protect hurts and sirianni from their lunkhead egos.

idk if I *need* @pablo.show to find out that you’re not supposed to get on a long international flight with blood clots, but I would welcome maybe a little digging into the so-called medical experts who thought it was an ok idea

He's not just yelling at a reporter, he's yelling a *student* reporter. Capital News Service is the student-staffed wire run out of my alma mater, the University of Maryland (obligatory, go Terps). And tbh she stood her ground better than I think I would have!

Republican Rep. Andy Harris incorrectly told a reporter they were breaking the law as the reporter and others recorded an exchange with him last night. Harris had just wrapped up a debate with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz.

Every once in a while I read something like this that feels like it’s from a completely different world, and I realize I’m an outlier not the norm. I am constantly hosting and I love it, but it’s admittedly sometimes to the point of exhaustion. I am Roman Catholic, it cannot be helped.

This article offers half a dozen reasons why people have stopped having friends and family over, but it ignores the fact that the women who planned parties and kept homes tidy enough for unplanned guests are now working for pay full-time (usually more than 9-5). www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

Some of it I think is also related to the decline of cooking at home. Meanwhile, I am over here getting all hot and bothered thinking of all the different things I can do with the crown of broccoli sitting in my fridge.

We’ve been doing a rotating monthly dinner with two other couple friends and I can’t recommend it enough. We’re meant to be with each other!

when u live behind a movie theater, but primetime is no longer playing, so you have to get in the car and drive 10 minutes down the road :(

Madeleine Baran and the work of In The Dark has been maybe the single most formative influence on my work covering the justice system. Curtis Flowers deserved better than what he got, but all the Curtis Flowers still out there deserve nothing less than what Madeleine gave.

“One of Curtis’ favorite hymns was the traditional lament, ‘I Couldn’t Hear Nobody Pray.’ In one version, the singer requests of God: that, if it be His will, He ‘remove this bitter cup.’ Curtis’ cup was bitter, but he was not. He was gentle. And he endured.” mississippitoday.org/2026/10/07/c...

yesterday, one of them asked me how I'm holding up as I entered hour two of scanning

shout out to librarians, I am regularly appearing at the local library with hundreds of pages of documents I need to scan and they are just completely unfazed

when gabby windey puts out a stunning memoir in like 18 months, and everyone acts smug because they knew about her writing prowess from the vibration plate substack post, just know I’ve been annoying my friends about her since April 2025!!!

omg god bless the internet archive, she lives! web.archive.org/web/20170825...

The Cornell case has me thinking a lot about my senior year of college, when I spent an entire semester interviewing Greek life members about sexual assault. The story link is broken, but iirc, I found out that like every chapter was running their own kangaroo court to deal with sexual assault.

None of the adults I interviewed thought that was a good idea, but I was struck by how sorority sisters in particular felt like every other system had failed them so they had to rely on internal pressure to punish their abusers. And in some cases, it worked!

But I have to wonder if there's still a culture that would support that kind of thing going today. This was 10 years ago (💀) but pre-Me Too. It did really feel like there was a culture of consent bubbling up, even in the stickiest of frat basements. Maybe I was naive to feel that way.

The Title IX and criminal justice systems at UMD at the time were so unreliable that the fraternities were using their standards boards that are supposed to be for like, property damage, to litigate sex crimes by their own members.

🧵 1/ In March, ICE arrested Carlos Moreno, a blind and partially deaf father of four as he was leaving court in Pottsville. He was there to pay a fine for a noise citation. The agents ripped him away from his pregnant wife, Wendys, without explanation, leaving her to prepare for birth alone.

4/ Local agencies have been opting in to the sprawling deportation campaign since it began in 2025, offering different reasons for the decision: money, oversight, belief in the mission. We did this story to demystify what that choice means for the families who are caught in the federal dragnet.

2/ Carlos spent nearly six months in the Cambria County Prison, a local jail that makes hundreds of dollars a week holding immigrants for ICE though an agreement with the federal government. Defenders of these agreements say the local jails are more accountable, and keep people closer to home.

3/ But Carlos spent the months leading up to his son's birth 200 miles away from his family. Within the jail, he struggled to receive accommodations for his disabilities. His time in the jail left him so defeated, he decided to give up his asylum case and face deportation without meeting his child.

This is an awful story about horrible things happening to children, and I don’t want to downplay that. But I am serious when I ask what is the deal with chiropractors? I’ve gone a couple times, not anymore. But it was never an experience that felt…medically sound.

I went to a guy for forward head placement and neck pain and he brought up “The Body Keeps the Score.” Turns out I have hypermobility, so it probably would’ve been bad to let him whack my neck multiple times a week like he wanted.
