Huge event. Failed Jared Kushner/Trump luxury hotel project planned for Belgrade played a role in starting expanded protests against Vucic.

Aleksandar Vucic, Serbia’s longtime nationalist strongman, conceded defeat Sunday in a general election held after his once-tight grip on power was weakened by nearly two years of student-led protests. nyti.ms/4zegOaY

President Trump temporarily waived clean-air rules for industrial facilities that spew cancer-causing gases. Then his appointees worked to gut the regulations altogether. Our investigative reporter Eric Lipton explains how corporate interests took power inside the EPA. Read more: nyti.ms/4il3336

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

Hard agree. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s because Meta sued the author and got a gag order that prevents her from saying a single word about her own book. Mark Zuckerberg is a threat to human rights and democracies the world over, including ours. It is vitally important you know how and why.

Given the news that Meta throttled Lula in Brazil and stories like this one below every Dem state legislature should open an investigation into whether the platforms have attempted to influence elections in their states.

Add Riverseed PCS to the list of schools. National Guard and FBI assembled there today in large numbers

The article mentioned Bard HS and Bruce Monroe ES but left out three other elementary schools: - Wheatley in Trinidad - Malcolm X in Congress Heights - Tubman in Columbia Heights Failing to mention them makes the problem of military outside schools seem much smaller. The scale is so alarming! 3/

In America, the military should have zero role in domestic policing. Period. Taxpayers like me are footing the bill for Guard members that cost nearly double an MPD police officer - and with far less local oversight. 19/

Worst of all, we've seen little action from the DC Council to bring transparency and accountability. Fortunately, ‘November is coming!’ Elected officials who fail to demand real oversight that protects our kids and neighbors may be washed to the sidelines. 20/20 End 🧵

The scale of these patrols outside schools is so large that parents from every ward have started tracking in spreadsheets. Sadly, your reporting missed the larger story; in August the Guard launched a secretive second phase of the occupation focused on residential neighborhoods . . 17/

Whoever ordered this invasion kicked off a wave of nightmares for hundreds of Pre-K and K-5 children, parents and teachers - many of whom were subjected to nearly an hour of deafening noise inside classrooms as a Park Police helicopter looped at low altitude. 15/

Your article reported on a similar invasion of over 20 soldiers and other armed federal law enforcement (also with Park Police air support) outside Bard HS, but failed to mention several other elementary schools targeted by Guard, including Wheatley, Harriet Tubman, and Malcolm X to name a few. 16/

Bottom line: we can’t rely on billionaire-owned news outlets to do fair & accurate reporting of Trump’s abuse of power. And we need to demand more action from DC Council and our in coming Mayor. They need to be vocally fighting for transparency & accountability of Guard and Feds actions in DC 13/

Here’s my unedited letter: To the Editor, As a parent of two young children at Bruce-Monroe Elementary School, I am outraged by the 9/17 deployment of large numbers of heavily-armed, out-of-state National Guard and FBI agents during school drop-off hours. 14/

So why did WaPo fail to cover this? And why did they cut this line from my letter? “The public deserves to know more about this 2nd phase of the NG deployment & whether they are intentionally targeting schools. Stars & Stripes reported this, but few details have been shared with the public” 11/

My theory is WaPo is letting Trump’s Guard and ‘Safe & Beautiful’ Taskforce sources set parameters on their reporting. Why else would they exclude Wheatley and Malcolm X from both the article and my letter? Here's video of Guard marching by Malcomb X: www.instagram.com/reel/Dd6cgcg... 12/

WaPo has failed to cover the Guard’s secretive Phase 2 when there’s a huge opportunity for real investigative journalism - or at least asking their Federal sources some tough questions. The public has almost no information about what the Guard’s operational plans are. In fact . . 9/

The only reporting of Phase 2 I’ve seen was buried in a Stars and Stripes story: “Troops will . . begin transitioning to the next phase. Though few details were shared, the next step includes transitioning into neighborhoods such as Anacostia and Trinidad.” www.stripes.com/theaters/us/... 10/

The original WaPo story includes quotes from Trump’s Fed law enforcement spokespeople, including US Marshalls & US Park Police. Not a single quote from National Guard leaders, which is strange because the story is about outrage at them outside schools. www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202... 7/

washingtonpost.comThe National Guard keeps appearing outside D.C. schools, stoking tensionsThe U.S. Marshals Service says the guard members and federal agents are there to deter crime. Families say their presence is ineffective and unsettling for students.

Here’s where it gets much darker. My letter also criticized WaPo for missing the larger story, failing to cover how the 3,000+ Guard troops in DC have quietly shifted into Phase 2 of their deployment, pulling out of touristy areas and aggressively moving in to residential neighborhoods. 8/

So I naively shared two news stories about Guard troops massing outside Wheatley elementary, and a video of troops marching in front of Malcolm X elementary. But my jaw dropped when I got this response: “We are unable to safely include those names, so I think we have to pass on the letter.” 5/

When I pushed back, I got a strange response from the WaPo editor: “We are unable to add the information about the other schools without robust sourcing, which is why that was edited to include the confirmed information in the article.” Ok, I thought, maybe this is coming from fact checker. .. 4/

What an odd moment in United States history. A U.S. president is running an overtly political camaign advertisement, right before midterm elections, paid for by the U.S. government. Trump appears to believe he is immune from any kind of legal limit. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/27/u...

It’s part of a wider transformation that’s taking place across the Western US, from OR to NM, as bigger hotter wildfires sweep through forests that have not evolved to survive high-intensity blazes & a warmer climate. As much as 40% of Western conifer forests will turn into shrub land by 2100
