I am recruiting PhD students this year, so if anyone knows anyone interested in projects related to hunter-gatherer subsistence transition, (in)equality, sharing and material culture, please tell them to be in touch.
I have some funds for field oriented projects. Contact details on my dept page.
Baylor Anthropology is recruiting graduate students for fall 2027 entry. We have generous stipends, extraordinary lab facilities, a beautiful campus and a lot of exciting research opportunities. Over the next two weeks we will be sharing details of our world class faculty and their specialisms.
Bureau of Land Management just approved blasting through 100-foot canyon walls at the entrance to Nine Mile Canyon, UT, home to 10,000+ rock art images spanning 8,000 years.
47 historic sites sit in the blast zone. It's for oil tankers.
Here's what's actually happening 🧵
I have fallen into a rabbit hole of AI-generated (I suspect) books on #Amazon.
This 2026 book apparently aligns with my interests (the topic does!).
- The cover is not sediba (or spectacular new fossil discoveries must have been made? @leeberger.bsky.socialwww.amazon.com/Human-Evolut...
Aside from other fossil hominin-books, the same "author" produced books on other topics like:
www.amazon.com/Siderian-Per...
"This is the only comprehensive guide to one of Earth's most transformative—yet least understood—geological periods."
75 titles in all, but some both in English and Japanese. www.amazon.com/stores/Masak...
AI-generated? Japanese originals that were poorly translated? A combination of both?

The blurb seems off:
- "Step inside the Malapa Cave": the roof has eroded off, so you cannot now step inside what used to be a cave.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malapa_...
Then it turns out the same "author" has written more books:
www.amazon.com/Complete-Gui...
"The Complete Guide to Australopithecus Anamensis takes you on a fascinating, scientifically backed journey"
sediba book: "This comprehensive guide takes you on an unprecedented journey"
Vlaamse overheid gaat bloedbad plegen in culturele sector maar bovenal erfgoedsector. Ééntje uitgelicht: provinciale archeologische musea verliezen _alle_ subsidies.
Volgende keer dat de regering wil uitpakken met haar groots natieverhaal, smijt een exemplaar van de Vlaamse Canon in hun richting.
In my course on Human Evolution, the first assignment is to identify a misunderstanding or misuse of human evolution in popular culture. A fun way to gauge pre-existing knowledge among students.
I also try to take part in the assignment myself and so allow myself an annual (pedantic) comment.
This I wrote a letter to @volkskrant.nl reacting to a column stating that we are reverting to an ancestral state where we lack empathy was published. Our ancestors always had emphathy. Its absence would be something new (and terrifying).
The column is here: www.volkskrant.nl/columns-van-...
I don't know to whom the credit goes for this! It appears sans ™ on another platform.
Brilliant. Students of #ashwell26... This was the soil matrix drawing you deserved, not my poor dry erase board scribbles 😂
#archaeology#geology
Please shout if you are the clever originator!
It's all about history isn't it though.
The men said they were disappointed the ring failed to meet its reserve bid of £8,500, but they would attempt to auction it again in the future... the men hoped it would auction for...somewhere between £25,000 and £30,000.

Let's talk about AI in archaeology journalism. NB: Never use AI to illustrate news stories on the ancient world (or really ever). Beyond just ethics, the public cannot tell that this is a fake image of the mummified remains found with a Homer papyrus on his abdomen. These images are taken as real.
🚨 I’m very happy to finally share two papers published together today in Communications Earth & Environment! 🎉 They represent a big part of my #PhD research and tell one connected story about #animals, #environments and #hominin life along the Lebanese coast during the #Paleolithic 🧵 1/9

The Faculty of Archaeology at Leiden hosts the annual meeting of the Oriental Numismatic Society and they are holding a coin auction 😱
I think any trade in Antiquities ultimately promotes looting. As archaeologists we should be more outspoken against attaching commercial value to heritage.
There's still time left to apply for one of two PhD fellowships our new project on Social Networks Before Agriculture!

I am now recruiting a PhD student in Middle Eastern #archaeology to work on raw material sourcing as part of my new DFF-funded project Networks Before Agriculture. Please spread the word or get in touch with me if you have questions:

A federal judge in Virginia heard arguments from a salvage company seeking to auction items recovered during an expedition to the Titanic shipwreck.
News of the sale has prompted outcry from archaeological and scientific communities. https://wapo.st/4604ZIo
Prof Tim Forssman's important new book is out now. It examines #Africa’s past within wider intellectual and transregional contexts. Tim is a Research Associate at the School & Professor at the University of Mpumalanga. link.springer.com/book/10.1007...
Very happy with this result. Combination of #eclipse images (time lapse) with 35 mm lens, one image per 5 minutes, from #Leiden, the Netherlands. Old Leiden Observatory bottom right.
We (don't hear) enough about the real change that is driving these events – the accelerating climate crisis powered by fossil fuels.
It is time to stop treating each disaster as an isolated tragedy and recognize the systemic risk that is unfolding before our eyes. - UN secretary general.
Cooling buildings accounts for nearly 10% of electricity use globally. That is expected to grow as heatwaves become more frequent, intense and long-lasting

As someone in this picture I find it a little odd that @natureportfolio.nature.com chose this image to illustrate the point.
We were very careful when choosing a slogan for our signs that it be scientificly defenceable.
"Science says New Oil & Gas = Death" is a plain statement of fact

The first molecular evidence of Homo naledi from at least 20 individuals shows that none are male. I've taken a deep dive into how the paleoproteomics works, what it says about naledi relationships, and why this result is less surprising than it sounds.

"The sale is not just about the value of the ring; it is about the history behind it and the privilege of being the person who helped bring an important piece of the past back into the public eye*," Jones said
*Albeit temporarily. The ring went to an unnamed phone bid.
~20,000 years ago, South African societies were producing microlithic stone tools in quartz. To understand how they reliably managed this in such a hard to work material, we conducted knapping experiments. They were just published @sidestone.bsky.socialwww.researchgate.net/publication/... 🏺
We show how this production represents a flexible approach to knapping where no single chaine operatoire was followed, but the a repertoire of different moves was recombined as circumstances dictate.
Metal detecting is not just problematic in the Netherlands. I think we should address the myth of the detectorist as a citizen scientist.
Citizen science is about cooperation and co-creation. Here, the best-case scenario is reporting finds after the fact, worst-case: illegal trade in antiquities.
People really shouldn’t blame students for responding to loans in the way that they do, or for thinking that university is about skills training. They’ve been getting that message their entire life.
Ik had wat gedachtes bij die affaire in Limburg rond het veronderstelde graf van D'Artagnan: de rol van andere archeologen, de rol van de pers, en de toekomst van de #archeologie.

(1/8) Who is Deal Man?
Deal Man is an Iron Age carved chalk figurine on display at Dover Museum. He was discovered in 1984 during excavations by the #Dover Archaeological Group ahead of construction work on a site adjacent to St Richards Road in, #Deal.

Detectorists welcome the auction of elements of the Hambleden Hoard of medieval coins at Spinks, dispersing the "internationally important" find for private gain.

My new #UrbanPrehistory blog post reporting on the horrible fate of the Bogleys Stone of Fife - Barn Storm. This contains a trigger warning for anyone who thinks our heritage - and megaliths - matter.
