IANA insurance expert, so I found this to be a good pre-election primer. Key line for me, from a NZ expert: “the only way to [stop rising premiums] is reduce the risk through public policy." To me, that means targeted, but mandatory, mitigation. That said ...

The idea is semi-modeled after programs in New Zealand and France. Could it work to solve Calif's wildfire insurance problem? I talked to half a dozen experts trying to give the idea the fairest shake possible. Please read and please SHARE if you find it helpful:

Is anyone else's kid going through their Robin Hood phase? I'm enjoying it *so much* but also feeling stunned at how subversive it feels to talk with a 5-year-old in 2026 about idolizing outlaws who rob from the rich to give to the poor. Where's my parent support group?

He told us this morning that for Halloween he wants to be Robin Hood, I'm to be Maid Marian and his dad is to be Friar Tuck (said dad is campaigning for Little John instead!)

During the 2025 fires, water management was uniquely blamed compared to past fires. Sharing this new UCLA+USC study released today wherein we show that political sentiment from partisan cues was by far the most powerful explanation regarding the role of water management in the 2025 LA fires.

Seems like a good point. I always try to let a reader know the contours of scientific consensus whenever covering debate or controversy in the research realm

Danny Cullenward@ghgpolicy.org

I’m all in favor of scientists making grounded criticisms of one another’s work, but everyone involved in this debate needs to ask themselves: am I sharing my views in a way that undermines external confidence in my field, and is that necessary to make my technical point?
