jfc, 7.8 tonnes of methane an hour! Roughly the same as the grid emissions for half a million homes.

Elaine Johnson@elainejohnson.bsky.social

“After days of confusion, the West Australian government has confirmed it is now actively investigating repeated large methane emissions from Chevron's Gorgon gas project off the state's Pilbara coast.” www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

Any Aussie energy folks heading to All Energy expo this week? We can hang out, pretend to be procuring for a large data centre provider, maybe get a free pen and a beer

For decades we were told that this plant could exist because “carbon capture and storage” was going to sequester carbon in bedrock — Dear Reader, they told that lie so they could sell gas.

Climate disaster keeps disastering: Satellite monitoring has detected massive plumes of methane pouring from Chevron's Gorgon LNG plant in Western Australia. (This is the one connected to the world’s biggest carbon capture and storage project WHIICH IS ALSO FAILING) www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

They disinvented the VCR. You might think that the reason we don't have VCRs anymore is because VCRs were supplanted by DVDs, PVRs and streaming, but that's not the case. They had it in for the VCR from the very start, and they never stopped trying to kill it. Eventually, they succeeded. 1/

Unlike that of the rest of southeast Asia, Pakistan's gas demand has been falling. Pakistan's solar boom is partly attributable to excellent do-it-yourself videos on Tiktok and youtube, and partly to two other factors, says Zainaab Basil in an interview with BNEF. www.bnef.com/insights/40017

Lazy web request: I recall a mention of an Australian gas company running an internal staff training program alongside the lines of "fossil fuels are fine, actually". Anyone know more?

Conventional wisdom says rooftop solar meets **exisiting** electricity demand. What if rooftop solar actually **increases** electricity demand, improving living standards and driving economic growth? This is exactly what our new analysis of Pakistan's solar boom shows. Let's dig in.. 🧵

Attention fellow energy nerds: we're running an "Open-Source Energy System Modelling Workshop" later this year! Looking for contributors - presentations, demonstrations, tutorials, and open discussion on topics relevant to the open-source energy modelling community .. anything really! 🔌💡

Starmer being able to lay out his own departure timetable (potentially over months!) is silly. You don't give a PM a farewell tour, you do the numbers over the weekend, roll him at 10am, and tell the voters he's gone to live on a nice farm in the country. You amateurs. You absolute toddlers.

Shell’s Prelude is a big floating gas terminal located half-way between Broome and Timor. Let me tell you about how repeatedly exposing its workers to life-threatening risk between 2020 and 2023 have led to the facility being issued with $200m worth of entirely unearned offset credits. 🧵

Tim Baxter@timinclimate.naruresearch.com.au

I've put a new piece of analysis out today showing how Shell's Prelude LNG terminal will receive a butt tonne of free offset credits from the safeguard mechanism for no other reason than because it repeatedly exposed its workers from life threatening risk. Really!

Good stuff! I've come to the maybe cynical conclusion that these sorts of programs cannot solve for an "equitable transition" 🧵

We could be much more clever about it. AFAIK, they are a black box right now in terms of who is receiving them, how they are aligned to needs, and who has the incentives.

NSW used to have a program where you could swap a concession for a free solar system. Programs like that mean the market & government could facilitate solar/battery systems where it's feasible, while maintaining a safety net for everyone else.

Solutions? 1/2 Allow virtual net metering and support mid scale renewables... community solar, solar gardens, whatever you want to call it. But it's a regulatory nightmare with few to champion it... I'm not hopeful.

2/2 Energy concessions! We already have them! Funded from a somewhat progressive tax system & means tested. I think this is the only way to ensure there are no gaps.

We treat behind the meter assets with enormous privilege in Australia... Home solar is almost free to connect, build the same asset for a 1000 people to share on the other side, and you'll be up for $$$ in grid studies etc, and never be able to deliver power as cheaply.

So even if funding was adequate for everyone, you'd still have a huge gulf between the haves and have nots. Often for dumb reasons over which residents have no control... there is a tree in the wrong spot, the roof is the wrong shape, there is an emergency exit in the way.

I originally got into community energy because I was interested in solving this... why should the asset have to be on my property? Why can't it just be netted off?

Good stuff! I've come to the maybe cynical conclusion that these sorts of programs cannot solve for an "equitable transition" 🧵

And I am so, so, so angry at the stupid culture wars and deliberate blocks put in place to the nation being able to have energy sovereignty. That any chance we had of transitioning the energy economy was derailed decades ago by fu*kers simping for fossil fuel. Energy security IS national security
