You, me, and anyone with internet access do unpaid, uncredited data work to feed AI models.
What is data work, and why does it matter? I discuss this in this interview with DW. I also cover labor exploitation, classification and bias, and power concentration in the AI industry: p.dw.com/p/5O0Mm
Happy Release Day to @feliciafm.bsky.social and her gorgeous scifi fantasy novella, THESE BRIGHT AND PERILOUS DESIGNS! Absolutely love this story and we're so excited it's out in the world today! geni.us/TBAPD
About 7 years ago I went on a campaign to convince people that the CIO role was about to become the most powerful de facto academic officer at the university; should be subsumed to faculty governance. The LMS was their opening gambit, then brand cohesion & centralized syllabus databases. Now AI.
Assuming Counterpoint is included in the Catapult news, that means that 20% of this year's National Book Awards longlist for fiction was published by imprints that will no longer exist in their current form by the time of awards night.
People mention LLMs a lot in terms of "increasing accessibility"
And as someone with intermittent cognitive disabilities, I *really* want to highlight how much work it is to sort through AI slop to try to find accurate information
The main way the LLM boom has affected my life is to make a lot of things so much harder. It makes information filtering an even more constant grinding process than it already was: it's noticeably worsened search info quality and makes it harder to find anything reliable and/or human and/or real.
Silly me, I didn't know there was a #MushroomDay lmao but it's the perfect day to tease my new poem about a bored mushroom peeking at the secrets of the corpses in the graveyard 🍄 💀 🖤 This is a mushroom-shaped game poem when you can make your own ending by playing with the hyphae of the mycelium!!!!
Did someone say it's #MushroomDay?!

So, here's a broadside preview of "Fungal Avocation" by @gailguerrero.bsky.social (2026's last 🥹). We're finishing up audio this week for author approval, then it'll be time to schedule for Nov 6.

[emotion] to be a data point on this one!
I still think about leaving academia at least a few times/year. And that's with a prophylactic amount of awesome collaborators!
As a PhD student designing my first survey, I added what I thought was a throwaway question at the end. To my surprise, thousands of academics answered it! The paper is out today: doi.org/10.1093/pnas...
I'm nowhere as skilled as professional translators, but throughout my life I have played a game with friends, where we take turns choosing a song or poem, independently translating it, and then having long discussions about our choices.
The impact of even seemingly tiny changes is delightful 🤩
1/2
We even tried doing it with recipes a few times, and although the discussions were probably overall shorter, there's still nuance even in something so formulaic.
I ❤️ language (and people) 🥰
Absolutely what this student says.
One of the most profoundly sad things about AI boosters is that they seem not to understand that the journey is more important than the destination, the thinking, the understanding, the revelation that comes along the journey is what matters, not the end product.
My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
one of my primary influences in this project is Anni Albers, particularly her weavings. i love her combination of minimalism, detail, and and organic textures. it's wonderful the way she draws one into seeing process as motion, and invites people to imagine how processes work internally.
Scientific publication venues - journals, conferences, preprint servers - should offer authors transparency, consent, and *choice* without prejudice in the options for avoiding LLM use in the process. AHM Journals Working Group Recommendation: www.ahmath.org/recommendati...#🧮#AcademicSky
For @wired.com, I spoke with workers about the quiet push to experiment with AI tools from book publishing executives at the Big Five. www.wired.com/story/book-p...
We're excited to share this discussion about how publishers are handling the question of human authorship, the different solutions on offer, and mythbusting for writers anxious about submissions!
With scam artists empowered by LLMs, writers and editors have common cause to worry about submissions. That's why Emerging Tech is gathering @bonabooks.bsky.social, @reckoningmag.bsky.social, & SFWA Publications for I SWEAR I'M NOT A ROBOT Tues, Oct 13 at 1pm PT. RSVP today! sfwa.org/events/?even...
the "adapt or die" people failed to consider the secret third option of forming a neoluddite community where I'm selling my latest video game on usb sticks in a little lemonade stand
David Byrne is no stranger to bringing extraordinary ideas to life. But what about ideas that are ahead of their time? How do we reawaken them?
Flora chatted with David about his new book “Sleeping Beauties: Why Good Ideas Go Dormant and How They Wake Up,” and which ideas resonated with him most.
Yeah it’s not lost on me that it was a man who suggested family meal planning is rote. Research and loved experience shows that women structure their invisible labor to make the labor the men in their lives are willing to do predictable, ergo suitable to routinize.
Happy birthday Effie!!
And thank you for doing this! This year I had my translations of a Ñuu Savi poet, Kalu Tatyisavi, come out in Latin American Literature Today.
His work reckons with colonialism & language loss in Oaxaca

The AI industry wants you to say "the AI just did that thing on its own!"
Like, United Health's AI that's denying a shitload of claims with a 90% error rate? They wanted you to think it's just the AI.

Has a commercial edtech company or school chain ever had the press attention of Alpha School? Getting in Scientific American seems like a big win for Alpha School PR. Reckon it's also a clear sign of its strategy to claim *scientific* legitimacy. www.scientificamerican.com/article/alph...
