I’m seeing people reacting by pointing out that he’s obviously wrong. I appreciate that, but it’s also a pointless exercise. The problem isn’t that he’s wrong. The problem is that this is normal in American politics — and it’s been normal for a while.

yes he's factually wrong, but the bigger problem is that our heads of government are stoking nazi-grade ethnic hate with absolutely no fear of criticism from their own party

It's maddening because (imo) we have such an extreme housing shortage. Boston should build, build, build. They should want like 500K new units in the next three years. SF should build over 1M! Just go HAM on construction!!

Boston’s chief planner is a true believer in the San Francisco model, in which you make it impossible to profitably build apartments by-right so developers are forced into a politicized discretionary negotiation with the city, which relaxes the rules in exchange for below-market units.

Yes, I can't anymore. It's horrible!!

NEW: We asked readers if they've been drowning in political texts, calls, mailers and TV ads, and to share pics of what they're getting. Hooo boy, did we get responses! Some fumed its been "harassment." Some won't donate to Dem campaigns ever again. www.huffpost.com/entry/voters...

I wonder if people consider their college biology professor a "living scientist."

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

Every year, Research!America does a poll that asks, "Can you name a living scientist?" In January 2026, 76% of respondents said "no." Of those who said "yes," 5% named a scientist who was, in fact, dead. www.researchamerica.org/blog/can-you...

All the messaging I get from this guy is how he has no money and struggling. It's really hard to overstate how much the incessant ActBlue text messages are a turn-off for candidates that otherwise seem fine. If he didn't ask me for money four times a day, I might be excited about him.

The amount of "pro-Palestinian" dunking/mocking of Brad Lander on Twitter yesterday was really wild and wildly depressing.

Joel S.@joelhs.bsky.social

Brad Lander is one of the most humane and decent people out there in American politics right now. And he’s a bulwark against genuinely radical anti-Israel politics in the US right now. And still, the Israeli government hates him. They’re writing off a whole generation of non-Orthodox American Jews.

This book was so good!

This is grotesque behaviour on the part of @historians.org, and it needs to be addressed directly.

In this explosive follow up to the story about the American Historical Association's use of DC lobbyists to silence AHA member Palestine advocacy, we have this: AHA is conducting a witchhunt of its Council. Loyalty oaths. Lawyers. Threats. Authoritarian behavior. www.chronicle.com/article/the-...

In other words it's not just that there are few academic jobs for humanists in the academy; it’s also that the academic jobs that exist are mostly bad in the sense that you have to struggle against the institution to have any semblance of intellectual life you thought the job was supposed to provide

I got an advance copy of GTA VI and I gotta say, the immersion into Vice City is crazy. Right now I'm doing a mission where you have to get into a lengthy online argument defending the low attendance of Vice City's sports teams and whether Vice City lacks passion for sports as a market

this looks so good, although I'm too old for this shit.

Kansas City Royals BBQ Reese's Sandwich (2022-2022): Pulled pork doused in Sweet Baby Ray's bbq sauce, crumbled bacon, and crushed Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, served on a toasted Vienna roll. Served exclusively at the Kansas City Royals' Kauffman Stadium during the 2022 baseball season

My memory is that this was openly acknowledged during my undergrad days at Cornell. It was by far the most prevalent form of affirmative action on campus, and generally across peer schools.

We couldn't wait for the Marco Polo Netflix show. The very first scene has Marco Polo arriving at the Mongol court (hell yeah!!) and... they think he is dirty and then proceed to wash him down?! The Mongols would never! They had a water taboo! Anyway, didn't make it past the first couple of minutes.

After reading the first fifty pages of A People’s History of the United States my feelings on Christopher Columbus have gone from “we shouldn’t have a day commemorating him” to something … much, much darker.

All this Bard news makes me think about a former colleague here who constantly complained about how much unlike Bard we were, how great Bard was, and how much credit Botstein deserved.

In my boyhood, the Straw-bear was a man completely swathed in straw, led by a string by another and made to dance in front of people's houses, in return for which money was expected.

This always took place on the Tuesday following Plough-Monday. Yesterday the Straw-bear was a boy, and I saw no dancing. Otherwise there was no change.'" (553 of the Oxford World's Classic edition)

"In England a custom like some of the preceding still prevails at Whittlesey in Cambridgeshire on the Tuesday after Plough Monday, as I learn from an obliging communication of Professor G. C. Moore Smith of Sheffield University. He writes:

'When I was at Whittlesey yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting a "Straw-bear," if not two, in the street. I had not been at Whittlesey on the day for nearly forty years, and feared the custom had died out.

Working on this reported essay, just published, increasingly took over my life for the last two months. PEN America did a terrible disservice with its sloppy reporting about American Jews and Israelis in publishing in July. Josh Lambert and I tried to do better. jewishcurrents.org/what-pen-ame...

All prisoners should have the right to vote while in prison

Taniel@taniel.bsky.social

Arguably the biggest democracy referendum next month: Virginia is one of only three states where the state constitution says people should lose their right to vote FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIFE if they are convicted of any felony. This measure would allow anyone to vote after prison.

Pretty clear to me there’s a very good case against this man for mass murder, and I’m saying that in as measured a fashion as I can. He’s order the killing of 234 people under no plausible war or legal justification. I am skeptical he will ever face legal accountability for til his but he should.

Grinnell has a required writing class for first-year students. As part of the class, we have to teach about academic honesty and avoiding plagiarism. Easy enough, I thought, until I got the first student question: "Why does Grinnell seem to take this so much more seriously than it does Title IX?"

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI

Obviously, I am not going to click on this link, but it cracks me up and speaks to how professional pols view the world, that "quitting the Democratic party" means also voting for Trump. Also, yes, just selling a book etc.

Evan Barker quit the Democratic Party and voted for Trump. Now she’s telling (a few) stories about what she saw in a new book that mixes gossip and condemnations of ‘woke.’ Her old colleagues aren’t happy.

I know I'm out of touch, because I've only seen five of the top 10 shows, and Curb Your Enthusiasm is the only one I didn't give up on (although I'll never get around to watching them all).

Duncan Weldon@duncanweldon.bsky.social

I’ve seen 64 of the NYT’s best 100 TV shows of the 21st century. And don’t really disagree with the inclusion of any of those. That’s a good hit rate.

"If you bring an iced coffee... you're disqualified." "How could you say that? I actually offer people coffee!" This discourse is engineering to drive me, specifically, crazy. OP is right, ofc.

Kai Ryssdal@kairyssdal.bsky.social

I’m sorry, but if you bring an iced coffee - or any damn beverage at all - to a job interview, you’re disqualified. It’s not hard, people.
