The most exciting thing at work is when I finally get to sit down and hand-write code carefully thinking about the people who will be maintaining it later

I need a prescription for something to declaratively manage a personal VPS with self-hosted services (forgejo, etc). what's the best route here that is not sacrificing myself upon the alter of kubernetes

By the way that Epic AI MegaJam thing is being "hosted" on itch.io - we all know he would never do it because he's a crackpot snake, but Tim could maybe curry some favor by offering to pay for hosting his company's shitty advertising gambit. Or not exploiting itch as a multi-billion dollar company.

todays protip: if the cosmos is telling you your design/code/idea sucks, stop and listen. often i find that some chunk of code will throwup more than its fair share of bugs, or not integrate well, or not live up to its hype/cost/time. rather than resent it increasingly over time, take it as a sign

The replies to this saying IA should not have used AI to defend from AI-powered attacks makes me seriously question whether bsky has the juice anymore. What are we even doing here.

An update from Brewster Kahle on today's outage.

People should understand that someone posted a halfway-working exploit PoC *over 12 hours* before the planned disclosure and patch release, forcing operators to respond to an unprecedented situation. It was already after-hours in US timezones.

please stop replying to game devs saying things like "well look on the bright side those laid off devs can start their own indie studios now" because eventually one of us is going to snap and "WITH WHAT FUCKING MONEY" would be a shitty last thing to hear before you die

I realized earlier that we're in for days of discourse about PHP being a bad language. no, all this proves is that C is the bad language.

this company is never getting a CA cert trusted again

This is an absolutely astounding press release from eMudhra. No apology, a suggestion that the researcher who found their private keys must have used AI, and an attempt to shift blame to auditors... wow. emudhra.com/en/press-release/emudhra-statement-distrust-global-tls-intermediate-root-ca

details leaked. this vulnerability is a full unauthenticated unconditional remote code execution exploit against any service running on a PHP version from 5.4 until latest yeah if anything deserves CVSS 11, this is it. this is CATACLYSMICALLY bad.

nightshade โ†’home, for now@nightshade.technology

oh it's bad. oh it's BAD bad. oh this is CATASTROPHIC, drop-whatever-you're-doing-and-patch-NOW levels of bad cert.europa.eu/publications...

The details are now public, as of two hours ago. bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi... The secret P-384 keys for these intermediate CAs are all zeros except the last 8 bits. All not-updated software can be MITM'ed now. IOT boxes that can't or don't update are now trivially MITM'able forever.

If you make HTTPS requests or have other TLS clients and care about MITM attacks, you need to update today. If you run Go: go get go@1.27.3 If you run Homebrew: brew update brew install ca-certificates If you run Linux, maybe stay off the internet for now.

What could be more Halloween than a BAT? How about a bat colored like a JACK-O-LANTERN? Let's meet the Painted Bat (Kerivoula picta), also called the butterfly bat, native to SE Asia. ๐Ÿฆ‡๐ŸŽƒ (๐Ÿ“ท: MerlinTuttle.org)

you know I knew the vibecode slop was getting bad but even *I* am getting constantly surprised by the sheer volume of it recently, and I knew it was a problem on github half a year ago

re: pillowfort, when it comes to "social media" platforms, you really have two options: 1. get a fuckton of ongoing investor money and pray you can eventually monetize the userbase profitably with ads they don't want to see 2. make your network federating to diffuse ownership and points-of-failure

the aformentioned 2021 pillowfort "security incident" was revelatory that pillowfort could not function without real investment, and subscription access to a social network is a non-starter. you don't get network effects with subscription fees at that scale

from reviewing an old dm with a friend: in 2021, pillowfort had full stored-reflected XSS, no server-side validation of any kind on any user inputs, SQL query injection, no rate limiting, and frontend built on Angular.js in 2021. it's sad, but it was never going to succeed without a top-down rewrite

Bluesky notably chose not to say directly that this is a vibe-coding tool on Bluesky itself, but here is the text of their Twitter post. Just interesting to see the way they market themselves to different audiences.
