Meet our Solar System's newest dwarf planet candidate: 2026 ED138! Orbiting past Pluto, scientists found it in NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory data from earlier this year. Early analysis suggests it's ~600–1500 km across, one of the largest found past Neptune!🔭🧪 🔗: rubinobservatory.org/news/rubin-f...

as i get older, i've come to place greater importance on not minimizing crimes and harm to society. but part of that is that in order to properly grapple with harm, you cannot feed perpetrators into a gratuitous torture engine. it eclipses the gravity of the crime and obscures the debt to others

If the goal is Software User Liberation, we must do all of: 1️⃣ recognize that LLMs liberate some users 2️⃣ recognize it ensnares others 3️⃣ use these tools to build good things faster than our enemies do 4️⃣ replace these tools as quickly as we can, but knowing that “quickly” might be years or decades.

not dissimilar to how handing abortion rights to each state creates a regulatory regime that's just bonkers
Example: to gamble in CA you *must* have information XYZ about an end-user. to do so in NY you are *prohibited* from retaining that. so you need legally separate entities, so you need physically seperate information storage, you need two seperate legal teams (who must be in CA/NY, of course)

little bit of a tangent: i once had a department chair who physically threatened me because the graduate student he was having an affair with was struggling in my class. i ended up resigning a few months later. so dating a student can have far-reaching consequences beyond the abuse of the student.

the talk doesn't quite put it this way but I had a revelation reading it: it's completely backwards to be generating plans and code alone and then collaborating on the review. we should be doing nearly all our collaboration on the planning. we do this in various ways already but it should be More

if i take this poll as indicative of a referendum on the status quo, my guess is that the older you are, the more financially stable you are (and therefore the more insulated from *~*~ current events ~*~* you get) ...right up till retirement age, where financial stability starts to fall off again.
Something is deeply broken in that 45-64 cohort. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/22/u...
