Credit where it's due: Josh Dunn, an NYC-based jazz guitarist well worth your attention pointed me in their direction.

The United for Portland PAC is basically a list of people The @oregonian.com asks to complain about topics in their newspaper.
Dan Ryan continues to be the absolute worst
Dan Ryan is under a court order not to delete messages from his personal phone, which may contain public records. In court documents, Ryan said he no longer has the phone he's been using, because his spouse traded it in the same day a judge barred him from deleting records. He says nothing was lost.

Shame on @councilordanryan.bsky.social for voting no on this basic amendment to improve safety planning, especially for people who live in North Portland.
We must view the CEI Hub as a safety issue, not just an economic or a permitting / land use one. This is about how the way the CEI Hub is set up will in a disaster cause widespread detriment to human (& environmental / animal) life & health. I'm grateful my colleagues agreed that this is important.
There's a bitter irony in the fact that the Reagan revolution's attack on school funding leading to not nearly enough people hating him
New polling on U.S. presidents % of U.S. adult citizens who rate each a great president Lincoln 57% Washington 52% Kennedy 37% FDR 34% Theodore Roosevelt 32% Obama 31% Jefferson 29% Reagan 27% Trump 20% yougov.com/en-us/articl...

I still don't understand why Kotek ran for reelection. She didn't accomplish anything, isn't popular, and isn't a good campaigner. I hope the blue wave and Drazen's awful politics are enough but it's a risky, awful bet
When asked initially who they were most likely to vote for, 46% of voters chose Drazan and 44% named Kotek. An additional 3% picked Brett Smith, the lone third-party candidate in the race, and 8% were undecided.

you will encounter more opportunities in life to change the batteries on a smoke alarm than you will to run into a burning building and no one gives a shit you changed those batteries but it is still very important and why are you waiting on a burning building, know what i’m saying, it’s a metaphor
Private schools are a tool for the wealthy to not have to care about public education, the same way that funding schools via property taxes is a way for wealthy neighborhoods to not have to care about school quality on poorer neighborhoods.
Allowing the most powerful segment of society to opt out of public services inevitably makes public services worse. This is why the existence of private schools inevitably makes public schools worse. A simple fact that seems hard for many to admit. www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/private-sc...

We’ve lived through the nearly complete systematic unwinding of the postwar public university, which for all its faults, was premised on the idea that not only aristocrats could be intellectuals, & that having non-aristocratic intellectuals was better for knowledge & therefore better for everyone

eliminating I-5 for a week seems to have caused remarkably minimal disruption to Portland's regional traffic flows. so why again do ODOT, Governor Kotek and the Oregon Legislature think we should spend three billion dollars (!) to literally double the width of lanes on I-5 through North Portland?
Carmageddon does a no-show in Portland. Closing the I-5 freeway increased AM peak hour travel times about five minutes compared to normal conditions. cityobservatory.org/wheres-my-ca...
I know the money is good and ownership has made it clear they don't care, but it is still a huge bummer that the Thorns' jersey sponsor is the fascist surveillance doorbell. Hard to imagine a pick more out of step with the fanbase short of Palantir or Flock
we’ve got a 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 just for you 👀 thanks to Ring, 3️⃣ lucky fans will win a prize pack delivered to you by a Thorns player! Enter to win: thorns.formstack.com/forms/ring_2...

City Observatory continues to keep up with the "carmageddon" beat - turns out, shutting down I-5 doesn't seem to be having hardly *any* impact on traffic congestion across the region. Why again does the Oregon Legislature want to spend over $3 billion to double the width of the RQ freeway? #orleg
Where's my Carmaggedon, Day 4. Thursday morning commute from Vancouver to Portland is 31 minutes, about 5 minutes longer than the pre-shutdown travel time, according to Google Maps. That's well within the typical range of morning commute times (20-40 minutes). cityobservatory.org/carmageddoni...
