I watched Babylon 5 at an impressionable age when it was in reruns. Walter Koenig's Alfred Bester has left an indelible mark on who I am as a writer and how I think about writing villains.

Koenig taught me the difference between "everyone's the hero of their own story" and "villains should be sympathetic." Bester was an advanced class in how to portray evil with depth without losing moral clarity or portraying horrific behavior as justified or sympathetic.

"just ignore them" is not a crazy idea anymore. it works. it works *too* well even. and I believe there is a situation room at every social media company right now trying to address this

I've donated to a few candidates before and so my name is on lists of folks who can be persuaded to open up their wallets for dems in close races. And it's true! I can! The magic words are "trans rights are human rights and I will not dignify weird creeps' obsession with teen girls' genitals."

If you don't want to "debate trans issues," then don't. Say "girls deserve to play sports with their friends without creeps trying to look in their pants. We protect women and girls by making sure they have equal pay, equal rights, and health care." This isn't hard unless you're a coward.

You can also try "I'm not sure why the party that elected a rapist and dismantled Roe thinks we need their opinions on how to protect women, but I do know they've made the US a dangerous place to be pregnant and an expensive place to raise kids" and then talk about what you're going to do about it

I vote blue, but not "no matter who." The who actually matters a lot. I'm glad to live where I am spoiled for choice in Dem candidates who will be normal humans with more important concerns than frothing with rage about teen girls playing sports with their friends.

this thread brought to you by a certain governor of California who's lining people up under a 2028 bus that's not even here yet, and the DCCC sending me screeds from James Carville as if I need to hear tough guy shit from a geriatric Josh Lyman who's too chicken to protect queer kids.

I think people intuitively understand that democratic candidates tossing trans kids to the wolves is not only morally repugnant but also politically ineffective, otherwise they wouldn't freak out every time someone said they weren't voting for a democrat who did this

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

Ever notice "abusers can grow and change" uniformly comes from people who haven't actually checked if someone grew or changed? It's like a magic wand of sentiment they wave over harm.

Okay so last night someone boosted a hide and seek comic where one of the first panels was something like "we broke the one rule" and now I can't find it in spite of a ton of scrolling and searching Anyone know what I'm talking about and if so can you give me the link?

Mime work, though often the butt of a lot of jokes in Looney Toons etc, is a serious art. Marcel Marceau was a master performer, but there are still people working in the field

Lots of people citing this one: HIV went from a death sentence to…undetectable and people get to live a full and healthy normal life!!!! I mean that’s amazing.

Fun tip: once you control for family income, absolutely nothing else—AT ALL—makes a statistically significant difference in academic outcomes Gifted and Talented programs are essentially just income-sorting

Ann Leckie@annleckie.com

Oh and ABOLISH GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAMS sweet bleeding mithras just get rid of that shit.

And before someone slides in with "my family wasn't rich and I Was Gifted," 1. Welcome to the anecdote club where the first rule is we are not data, and 2. Not rich != poor or even working class.

There are smart kids at all income brackets. But the less money your parents have, the less likely it is that your gifts will be noticed & nourished That's down to bias, and how much power your parents have to fight for you G&T != Smart, and smart extremely doesn't equal getting labeled "gifted."

SMUGGLE YOUR MATERIALS TO THE ARCHIVIST

Frank Cifaldi@frankcifaldi.bsky.social

Part of my literal job is to fly out to physical game studios to rescue and recover historical materials that might be endangered and put them in a permanent archive. @gamehistoryorg.bsky.social is a 501(c)3 publicly funded to do that, my DMs are open, and I'm free for the next couple weeks...

My circadian rhythm and I really need to have a conversation about expectations for its role because I managed to stay roughly on east coast time for an entire ten day trip and now I'm back east and oversleeping

I also blame Big Candy for daylight savings time being extended past Halloween; it should not still be dark at 7am Some of us need to wake up and go places

One thing I've learned from a depressing number of experiences with creeps in professional spaces: we'd be better off if we all accepted that we are, by and large, terrible judges of character

Nathan Tankus@nathantankus.bsky.social

To put a fine point on it, I've socialized with hucksters and they sometimes let the mask slip but I only **knew** they were full of shit from facts I learned externally from interacting with them.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that marginalized people are a bit better at it because pattern recognition is a muscle you can develop when you're repeatedly the target of shitty behavior— but being able to tell if someone is honest is really not an innate skill we have as a species
