I made the decision to make my own SFX from scratch and build my own audio infrastructure for my game. I didn't know what I was in for. After almost 2 months though, it's starting to come together. I totally understand why people resort to freesounds.org and fmod. #indiedev #gamedev #godot

I have to say though, there really is nothing like the satisfaction of conjuring a sound out of thin air with a bunch of overlaid synthesizers. But I don't know why I thought it'd be easier. I have experience making music with a DAW, and I thought that experience was more transferable.

Don't let billionaires convince you slop is the future. They're used to managing & directing, not making things themselves. Of course they can't see the difference. They don't understand your love for the craft. Keep making personal, beautiful games. You've got my support 💖

Ah yes, my smart TV which can barely run netflix and with AI upscaling that looks like shit will run a trillion parameter model and… and what exactly? What exactly will it do Dario?

Assuming self-replication means more than just copying the GB of parameters that make the models, why would it make sense to copy itself over to smart devices that have barely any compute capacity instead of say, desktops and game consoles and laptops and the like? Because it’s more spooky?

Yeah sorry folks, that one was too good to be true. I was 50/50 on this, mostly due to the fact that it would have been genuinely weird for bot armies to be concentrated in a single data center. Load balancing makes everything distributed, and internet traffic routing is extremely complicated.

I worked a year on the integrity team at Twitter back in 2021. One of our tasks was to gather evidence of the provenance of bot networks so we could take them down. Tying multiple accounts to the same origin is hard to do at scale, but we could do it well for individual campaigns.

I don’t know when it became more embarrassing to say “this is gobbledygook” and turn out wrong than saying “omg this might be real” and turn out wrong. It’s like our only mode of thinking is FOMO.

And here's part 2! In this one, I focus on how to use a custom SkeletonModifier3D to procedurally map a mesh onto a Curve3D. youtu.be/Ls_B0_XiS7w #godot #gamedev #indiedev

Here's a video breaking down the shader I made for this effect. Topics include the tangent space, vertex color, UV maps, etc. I also explain my Blender-Godot workflow since creating an effect like this required me to iterate between the two. #godot #gamedev #indiedev youtu.be/lJs4P3QzMGs

Beware of alpha transparency! Two years ago I made this skybox for my game, not knowing much about GPU rendering. It's basically 16 transparent and backlit textures cycling through each other and UV drifting, and it takes more time to render than all remaining 3D objects together. #godot #gamedev

Ok, this is actually good. You don’t need to concede AI doomer talking points to have a salient argument for regulating AI.

Elizabeth Warren@warren.senate.gov

Today, I'm calling to immediately press pause on the development of advanced AI while lawmakers and regulators put systems in place to keep people safe.

That was a cool read. Might look up Superluminal.

From the outside, rendering optimization can look a little bit like black magic. That's why @clayjohn.bsky.social, lead maintainer of the rendering team, is here to show a few examples of some optimizations from this year to highlight that optimizing rendering code isn’t as scary as it sounds.

It’s maddening to see people in such positions of power take this stuff seriously instead of laughing it off. Senator Patty Murray also reacted this way today. Please touch grass. Go talk to Cal Newport or something. Cal Newport is grass.

Governor JB Pritzker@govpritzker.illinois.gov

It's time to sound the alarm - louder - on reining in Artificial Intelligence. It's becoming more clear the threat AI poses to humanity, so I'm calling for immediate action from the industry and Washington.

All these AI companies are doing with pretending LLMs have agency is creating a way to deflect accountability. Please stop believing their rationalist sci-fi bullshit.

One thing that annoys me with all of the AI disclosure tools becoming popular on various platforms is that they can also be used by AI companies to exclude AI generated content from their training data.

I don’t think it’s possible for them to avoid model collapse if they keep pushing us to use AI for everything, but it sucks they can use what appears to be a defense mechanism against slop to make the slop slightly less sloppy for a bit longer.

Taking this plasma filament effect to the next level. Turns out it was pretty limiting to have only two bones to control the mesh, so now I have a whole bone chain with a custom SkeletonModifer3D that maps the bones to a Curve3D. #Godot #gamedev #indiedev

I've generalized the plasma filaments to make lightning too. It's basically the same shader with different colors and some added noise, and different lifetimes. #godot #gamedev #indiedev

I'm now using this lightning effect to signify charge transfers between various objects in the game. The game is just bursting with electricity! #godot #gamedev #indiedev

This is a bit of a wake up call for me. I’ve made the decision to make my code public and my assets private before agentic coding tools were a thing. I still want to help whoever might want to learn with/from me. But yeah, I’ll probably encrypt my code and assets when shipping.

This has nothing to do with open source or knowledge sharing. This has everything to do with consent, greed, and exploitation. Idealized fantasies do not help when the survival of a medium and its creators is threatened by forceful extraction of labor and mass-replication.

Here's the plasma effect in the game! I wanted the Scouts to attempt to revive each other when downed. The mechanic is not ready for primetime, but you can already see the benefits of the procedural nature of the plasma VFX. #Godot #gamedev #indiedev

I got inspired by a plasma ball to create this fun little VFX. Took me a couple of days to get the shader right, but otherwise, it's a simple mesh with one bone at each end. #godot #Indiedev #gamedev

I brought my two enemy types together for the first time, and it's janky, buggy, chaotic and delightful all at once! A central goal of mine to achieve replayability through emergent behavior, and this is the first time I feel like it's genuinely within reach. #godot #gamedev

Is it me or are passkeys really dumb from an end-user standpoint? Especially if you already were in the habit of using a password manager? Some websites are trying so hard to force you to use passkeys it’s incredibly annoying.

I’ve set a few passkeys up, and then subsequently tried to login to these websites with a different device and couldn’t locate the passkey. Am I doing this wrong or is this just bad?
