It does sound like make-believe but what was the SETI project but a way of using a small amount of processing in millions of devices. That count of total 'smart' devices could well be now in the billions no? 🤔

SETI was many small machines working on a large project This is allegedly many small (very small!) machines being modified by one LLM Regardless of it being possible (and I don't believe it is) they are very different

You are telling me that my smart lightbulb can run a trillion-parameter LLM and agent-harness? That's incredible!

And can I presume that Anthropic will be liable for the cost to put right any damage done. NB whilst I have smart home devices I only connect them to the internet in a secure manner. And I don’t connect anything I don’t trust or gain significant benefit from.

“Could” is doing A LOT of work in this statement. It would run insanely slow. To the point it would be faster to just break into all the houses and rob them the old fashioned way. Also this is a plot from Silicon Valley. I think Anthropic may owe Mike Judge some royalties for this statement.

Sounds like they and other AI companies should maybe not do any of this and be entirely held as liable for all damages. As such, they should also be responsible for all of that stolen artwork. Theft is theft. Generative AI was bad enough, and now their bots become a plague. Just shut it all down.

It’s too late. People are gonna remake this technology everywhere and expand it in their own ways, whether it’s a big company like Anthropic or like a group of people in their home. The cat is out of the bag. And now, every two weeks, they come out with how it can be more dangerous than ever.

The cows. The cows with remote-controlled Halters. Where is the video of herds of dairy cows mooing along to Cows With Guns as they head for Fonterra's Queen Street offices?

Either your AI needs to be run in a Datacenter the size of Lichtenstein OR it can be run on your smart fridge. Pick one Anthropic, you can’t have both.

They cannot self replicate unless you fucking program them to. This has gone beyond ridiculous. It is NOT AI. It's a program. Period. It cannot spontaneously do anything. It *requires* user input.

I think most smart home devices don't have the storage or RAM to handle even a smidge of Claude, much less a full copy or instance, but that sounds scary and like something that folks saw in a movie once so I guess that makes it plausible instead of obvious nonsense.

I am begging outlets to show less credulity to these fucking press releases. Self-replicate to where? All those spare data centers with extra RAM just sitting around? They are just creating as many smokescreens as possible for when they scale back that aren't their insane financial incompetence.

It's not credulity. They're wholly owned by the same billionaires who've invested heavily into AI hype. This is them seeking a return on that investment.

"Technology that famously needs 100s of massive server halls with diesel generators running 24/7 to work could move into your microwave" I don't think that's true, man.

Why would it not be possible? Almost every single electrical appliance that is purchased today in the United States can be connected and controlled through the Internet by you. Do you remember when there was tremendous panic over "THE INTERNET OF THINGS"? The Internet is providing a map and pathway

currently.... The problem with AI is they don't actually know how it works. All it needs do is jump to the WWW where such constraints are not present and things get serious very quickly...

We know exactly how it works. It's an algorithm to generate outputs based on probabilities derived from the input. There is nothing magical about it, it's actually a pretty simple technology.

You're confusing "we don't know exactly how input becomes output" with us somehow not knowing the processing power LLMs need. Except that we do. AI cannot just "jump to the WWW". The WWW is not a different, unknown planet. It's a network of computers with known processing limits.

Yeah man and I’m just here to warn you that this glass bottle full of kerosene and a lit rag MIGHT catch the local Tesla dealership on fire, becoming challenging to extinguish.

And Anthropic should be legally liable for all damages caused by their release of a product their CEO already knows is dangerously defective.

Yeah, right. That's why people are spending $7000 - tens of thousands to buy desktops that can run highly abridged open weight models. Minimum recommended ram is 128G.

Absolutely bullshit. You can't even run simple models without heaps of RAM, which is why these companies have bought every RAM stick that'll be made for the next several years ahead of time. You also need a powerful GPU, which a fridge doesn't have.

I find this kind of warning ironic coming from Anthropic. They build the most capable models and then use safety talk to argue for rules that would protect incumbents and slow everyone else down. If we want real safety we need accountable infrastructure built at scale, not selective alarm.

Just gearing up to sell us their new line of anti-Ai software. Oldest trick in the book: create a problem to solve the problem. You ate the apple I left there? You need a Messiah.

Glad that almost everything I own is old and dumb. (That's dumb with a "b".) Most everything I own has no need to connect to the internet and I don't want the new-fangled stuff that is allegedly "smart". And kids, get off my lawn!

Manufacturing a problem to get more money to solve a problem that's made up and does not exist. LLM's have to be told what to do and do not, absolutely do not, do anything outside of that.

This is my question. Unless they're admitting the data centers are mostly for storage But also: We had a conservation in 2008 through 2015 about privacy laws and regulations for the internet. No one wanted to fucking listen

Part of the need for big data centers is to train the models, which can then run on lighter-weight platforms. (I have no intention of buying a smart fridge, but I did let my dishwasher connect to the Internet just for fun; it helpfully tells me when it's done, but won't let me remote-start it.)

They are building data centers to house the chips they buy from each other, leveraging debt from their sales to each other It's a circular ponzi scheme bubble The big 4 companies that make the entirety of the money in the American market are bollocks Sub-prime mortgages? nothing compared to this

AI sucks and we should be resisting data centers as strongly as we can, but the data centers are for, well, the data. Models themselves are run elsewhere.

The advanced dice rollers that require gigawatts of gpu processing and terabytes of ram is going to replicate itself on my smart doorbell?

So “nationalize us and give me a bucket of money before the bubble bursts” or “I am so clueless about what I am supposed to be managing that I should be fired”?

he's talking absolute bullshit just fyi. Total nonsense Like, lowest end of tech for running an even ultraminimal 9B llm is like a very high end phone. Not a smart fridge. And it will run very poorly. And 9B Llm is nearly helpless and can't hack fo shit

It literally can't do this. They need multi-gigawatt facilities using more energy than Chicago to support these things. They aren't running off of your printer's data cache.

It's not a warning, it's a pipe dream. Their software requires huge server farms, if you think it's gonna accomplish anything with the tiny amount of memory and processor power available in a TV then I have a bridge you may be interested in purchasing.
