Should be a #budget to tackle inequality & the cost of living, to tax the super-rich, to begin wealth redistribution, to invest more in public services, to begin a green industrial revolution, to aim to increase human well-being & sustainability. Bristol Green MP @carladenyer.bsky.social is spot on.

Yes, the Greens are right. You can't transform society, tackling it's major problems, by mostly tinkering. Inequality, unfairness and unsustainability require new socio-economic goals, a wellbeing economy. #budget

Really heartening to see news from Brazil of Lula's historic election success. A brilliant victory for the environment and for progressive values over the far-right – proven all the more necessary given Bolsonaro's immediate attempts to undermine the outcome of a democratic election.

Bolsonaro's loss is not just a loss for Bolsonaro. It's a loss for Trump. For Musk. For Milei. For Netanyahu. For Farage. For Meta and Zuckerberg. For the meat barons, the fossil fuel corporations, and the rest of the neocolonial looters. And it is a massive win for humanity and the living planet.

Fascinating. Piers Morgan came across as lazy (he hadn't read Naomi's book) and I'll informed and inconsistent. Naomi was really clear and well reasoned. A good watch.

We don’t need a business-as-usual Budget. We need a Budget to tax extreme wealth and make the UK affordable. This is the scale of change Britain desperately needs – and only the Green Party can deliver it.

Glenn Vowles reposted

The working class are the wealth creators, by making things and providing services. The people who own businesses make profit. That's not wealth creation. Banks and government create money not businesses. Giving them tax breaks etc just funnels that money out of the economy.

Chancellor to pitch budget at wealth creators – UK politics live

theguardian.comChancellor to pitch budget at wealth creators – UK politics liveJohn Healey is expected to cut red tape requirements, particularly for smaller businesses Good morning. A week today John Healey, the chancellor, will be doing a media round defending the budget he is presenting on Wednesday next week. Ahead of that, he has given an interview to Patrick Maguire from the Times. As you would expect, there is no real detail in it about the measures he will be presenting to MPs. But the big picture message is very clear – and quite surprising, coming from a chancellor serving a PM who in some respects is steering left compared to his predecessor. Healey says that he wants to be on the side of bloody-minded entrepreneurs who make a profit, he acknowledges that government has made their life harder over the past two years, and he suggests that cutting the ‘cost of living’ for business is just as important as cutting the real cost of living for families. In the quote that gives the Times its splash headline, Healey says: I want to be a chancellor who backs business in Britain making a profit, and those entrepreneurs who, in the end, are the ones who challenge the status quo, come up with innovative ideas and are trying, some of them through sheer bloody-mindedness, to keep going through these sorts of pressures … If you’re not making a profit, you’ve got nothing to put back into the business. And for the people who start up these businesses, the ones who really thrive and grow, they have to make a profit — and they will be much more inclined to put it back into their own business. But we want it to grow here and stay here. If you talk to any of the businesses that have come in and have either had one-to-ones or round tables with me, I have recognised that in recent times there’s been a lot of pressure: employment law, regulation, tax, input costs, supply chains. And so when I talk about the cost of business, and recognising that in the same way as we’re recognising the cost of living pressures, I’m conscious of that as I go into the budget for both businesses and households. [Healey] is expected to use the budget to make significant cuts to regulation on businesses that one senior Treasury source described as “the sludge choking firms”. Reporting requirements are likely to be abolished for many smaller enterprises, The Times understands. Continue reading...

PM Burnham and the Government are well out of touch on climate and other crises. They are shifting the focus to individual actions, including advising households to 'stock up', when *they* are not on track with reducing problems, reducing damage and adapting crucial systems in our society.

Resilience is the ability of systems to retain their stability and security when subject to pressures and sudden events & their recovery powers when affected. High resilience systems, whether people, cities, societies are self-supporting, self-reliant, self-organising, adaptable to change.

Building resilience means increasing diversity, variety, alternative mutual support systems, contingency plans, especially with respect to basics like food, water, shelter, energy, health, education provision, communications - but there is under-investment and under-preparedness in all these areas.

PM Burnham and the Government are well out of touch on climate and other crises. They are shifting the focus to individual actions, including advising households to 'stock up', when *they* are not on track with reducing problems, reducing damage and adapting crucial systems in our society.

Govt focus is growth when it should be on wellbeing, security and resilience. By permitting new gas extraction in the North Sea instead of redoubling efforts on renewables and efficiency they have poured fuel on the fire.

The government didn’t just approve Jackdaw, they also reiterated their support for so-called tiebacks - a dodge to allow yet more new drilling without new licenses. This deserves almost as much scrutiny as Jackdaw and has got barely any of it, so I raised it in the Chamber.
